This was close after one quarter, Punahou ahead 14-13. It was still close at 19-18 before Punahou’s fullcourt press wreaked havoc on the Governors. The visitors sank four treys during a 25-8 run in the final 6 minutes of the first half.
Cole Arceneaux’s fastbreak trey from the left wing beat the buzzer. Punahou leads at the break 44-26.
Buffanblu open the lead to 63-28 with 2:24 left in the third quarter. Coach Steven Leopoldo platooning his guys from the start and getting a real good look at what they can and can’t do against fullcourt pressure and tight halfcourt man.
Punahou’s 2-2-1 press has been very opportunistic. Offensively, they are pushing upcourt quickly (please let’s not use the term “with pace” when all that really is, is a couple of words that mean running a fastbreak.
Buffanblu still using a lot of 5-out offense with pick and rolls against Farrington’s man defense. They looked sharp in summer league play and they are crisp now. Just as crisp as No. 1 ‘Iolani?
I say almost.
