Kalaheo takes Castle tourney title

It may be too early to say whether defending boys basketball state champion Kalaheo is in reloading or rebuilding mode.

It’s a fact, though, that the Mustangs are unbeaten after winning three games this week at the Castle Tournament. Coach Alika Smith’s team capped their run with a 41-40 win over St. Francis on Saturday night at the Knights’ gym.

Kalaheo defeated host Castle on Wednesday and Kamehameha II on Friday. With returnee Kupaa Harrison leading the way, the young Mustangs made smart plays down the stretch against St. Francis. The Saints are also young and finding their identity, but they’ve got 6-foot-5 senior Matthew Nuumanaia as their anchor.

Video interviews and game footage later in the week.

Wednesday’s scores
Kalaheo 65, Castle 51
St. Francis 53, Kamehameha II 45

Friday’s scores
St. Francis 77, Castle 53
Kalaheo 49, Kamehameha II 30

Saturday’s scores
Kamehameha II 60, Castle 52
Kalaheo 41, St. Francis 40
