Hoop Dreams wins AVAC/Swoosh title

Hoop Dreams of the Big Island captured the Freshman/Sophomore Boys championship at the Antelope Valley Athletic Club (AVAC)/Swoosh Las Vegas Tune-Up Tournament.

The event was played at Cypress College (Anaheim, Calif.). In pool play, Hoop Dreams defeated Hoop City 42-13 and OC Swoosh 49-21. In the semifinals, Hoop Dreams defeated California Stars 8-6 in a game that was terminated by officials due to bench conduct by a Stars assistant coach. Hoop Dreams then beat AVAC Ballerz 57-44 in the finals. HD used only its freshmen in this tourney.

Members of the ninth-grade team: Macmillan Aloisio, Kia‘i Apele, Elijah Blankenship, Izayah Chartrand, Jake Holtz, Keawe Silva, Koby Tabuyo-Kahele and Kaupena Yasso. The team is coached by Randy Apele, assisted by Kalani Silva and Dominic Pacheco .


The team then played in the Ninth Grade Division of the Jam On It West Coast Nationals tourney in Las Vegas, winning its pool before injuries struck and Hoop Dreams lost in the quarterfinals of the Gold Division.


Their third tournament was the Las Vegas Classic. Hoop Dreams went 2-1 in 10th Grade Division before winning the consolation title to finish 4-1.


The Hoops Dreams then entered the Las Vegas Grande tourney 10th Grade division. They lost to Perfect Circle (Long Beach, Calif.) in the championship game after beating them in pool play. HD was 3-1 overall in the Grande tourney.

Hoop Dreams girls team placed second in the JV Division, losing to WCA 37-29 in the finals. In pool play, the HD girls lost to Infinity 41-40 and routed MGB 42-22. In the semifinals, Hoop Dreams defeated OC Rhythm Gray 40-11. The team is coached by Pacheco, who is assisted by Randy Apele.
