Moanalua, Pearl City open OIA bowling with wins

bowling_IconDefending state champion Pearl City didn’t lose much over the summer, winning its OIA opener at Schofield Lanes on Thursday night.

Bradley Nakamura paced the Chargers with a 255 game and 669 series as the Chargers knocked down 3,122 pins. Aiea was a distant second with 2,745.

Brendyn Nayal of Leilehua was the only boy to outscore Nakamura in a single game, rolling a 257 but coming up 60 pins short of Nakamura’s series.

Pearl City’s girls were just as dominant, accumulating a total team pinfall of 2,689 to beat second-place Mililani by more than 100 pins.

Kristin Frost paced the Chargers as the only girl to exceed a 600 series, downing 633 pins over the three games. Danielle August of Mililani had the high game with a 258, beating Nayal by a pin.

Moanalua’s boys and girls ruled the East at K-Bay Lanes, with the girls outpacing Kailua 2,170-1,200 and the boys narrowly beating Castle 2,373-2,342.

The East scores were far behind the West’s on the girls side, with Kasey Ige of Kaimuki rolling a 215 to nip Kalaheo’s Kristi Sakaguchi’s 210 for high game. Hilary Martin led the winners with a top score of 190.

Sakaguchi beat Ige for high series with a 3-game total of 558. Ige’s 535 was the only other score over 500.

Cody Arquero of Castle rolled a 257 game to pace the East boys, but Jaren Apana was more consistent for Na Menehune. Apana put up a 599 series to Arquero’s 588, but his high game was only 216.

Both leagues resume competition at the same sites next Thursday, the ILH season doesn’t begin until Sept. 6 for the boys and Sept. 10 for the girls.
