Mililani rides RB Malosi Sam while playing without its head coach

By Jason Kaneshiro on August 10, 2019

One game into his Mililani career, Malosi Sam already owns a place among the program’s elite. The junior running back was admittedly feeling “a little bus’ up,” while walking toward the team bus after the fourth-ranked Trojans opened the season with a 30-26 comeback win over No. 3 Campbell on Friday night in Ewa Beach. It’ll be understandable if he wants to sleep in a bit on Saturday after carrying the ball a staggering 43 times against the Sabers. The […]

Mid-Pacific’s bats finally heating up in ILH tournament

By Jason Kaneshiro on April 24, 2019

In the midst of a frigid April, Mid-Pacific’s offense picked an opportune time to reignite. Following an 8-7 loss to Kamehameha in 15 innings on March 30, the Owls were shut out in their next three games, not including scoreless matchup with Pac-Five that was called in the third inning due a brush fire that threatened Central Oahu Regional Park. After being held to a total of seven hits in losses to Punahou (4-0), Saint Louis (1-0) and Kamehameha (1-0), […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on December 21, 2018

Back home for the holiday break after his first semester of college, Phuc Huynh planned to get some work in on the tennis court. Up until late Thursday afternoon, the ‘Iolani graduate had no idea his schedule would include a matchup with a member of the U.S. Davis Cup team under the lights in Blaisdell Arena. “At first I was nervous, but it was exciting at the same time being here to play a guy in the top 60 in […]

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 27, 2018

In the emotional aftermath of a dramatic comeback and third consecutive state championship, Lahainaluna coach Garret Tihada’s immediate thoughts went to an absent friend. “I treasure it a lot because this game is for one of our good friends, Barry Kubo,” Tihada said. The Lunas co-head coach went on explain that Kubo — a 1986 graduate, former coach on the staff and police officer — was in a far more significant fight as he deals with cancer. Yet he sent the […]

Gabriel’s milestone night ends with a title

By Jason Kaneshiro on November 3, 2018

Dillon Gabriel didn’t think much of his performance on Friday night. Chances are the Mililani quarterback was in the minority in his assessment. Gabriel completed 26 of 39 passes for 375 yards and three touchdowns and the Trojans captured the OIA Open Division championship with a 27-7 victory over three-time defending champion Kahuku on Friday at Aloha Stadium. “I didn’t do my part, but luckily we came out with the win,” Gabriel told the Star-Advertiser’s Nick Abramo after the win.
