Timmy Chang‘s 17-year state passing record is no more.
Saint Louis senior quarterback Tua Tagovailoa surpassed Chang’s record of 8,001 career passing yards in style with a 52-yard touchdown pass on a deep ball to Jonah Panoke to give the Crusaders a 13-7 lead over Kahuku with 5:36 remaining in the second quarter of the Open Division championship game on Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.
Tagovailoa, who needed 87 yards in the game to set the record, completed six of his first seven throws for 127 yards with the touchdown to Panoke.
“I’d just like to say congratulations to Tua, the Saint Louis Crusaders, the Crusader brotherhood and to his family,” Chang said earlier this week. “I’m very very proud of him and humbled by him. And to Tua, keep up the good work.”
Tagovailoa surpassed Chang’s mark despite playing in 10 fewer games. He entered the game averaging 263.8 passing yards per game and 83 total passing touchdowns. Chang averaged 195.1 passing yards per game and threw 113 total touchdown passes.
Tagovailoa finishes his career with 8,158 passing yards and 84 touchdowns and another 1,727 rushing yards and 27 scores to give him 111 career TD’s.
The highest rated quarterback ever to come out of Hawaii, Tagovailoa will enroll at Alabama in January and begin his career with the Crimson Tide.
He finishes his career 24-5 as a starter as the Crusaders defeated Kahuku 30-14 to win the fourth state title in school history.

From the many great QB’s to excell here in Hawaii McKenzie ain’t the “best”. He probably won’t even crack the top 5.
McKenzie is the fragilest QB in Hawaii high school history. Do the equivalence, comparisons & add up all variables of what caliber competition McKenzie went up against versus everyone else. Just as Vae Malepeai’s record & Joe Igbor. Compare the league & player for players on bother sides of the ball. McKenzie is in a weak era putting up numbers in a cupcake league.
