The 2016 Chevron Hawaii/HHSAA State Wrestling Championships begin Friday. To get you ready, we will preview the matchups in each weight class for both boys and girls.
FIRST ROUND
What a start, Waianae’s Randon Bailey sticks top seed Izaak Panlasigui Domingo in the first match of the tournament. He controlled him throughout. We will put complete results as we get them from the HHSAA, but boys already through to the second round include Logan Garcia, Drew Chong, Kolby Inouye, Isaac Stalcup and Landon Obra Nakata.

There are only two state placers in this whole bracket and they are both in this quad. Panlasigui Domingo was fifth last year after losing to Cody Cabanban and Colby Watase the year before and Adriano was sixth last year when Panlasigui-Domingo pinned him in 2:45. Panlasigui-Domingo is seeded for the third year in a row. Adriano and Obra-Nakata seem even, the Saber took fourth at Officials and the Monarch took fifth with Adriano beating him 7-5. Adriano took thinrd in the OIA after taking third in the West and Obra Nakata took second in the ILH aftger dabbling at 113.

There are no state placers here, and only one athlete who competed at Officials in Stalcup, who took an impressive third. ‘Iolani’s Dayne Torigoe took Officials and won again in January before disappearing. Stalcup won the OIA West and finished second to Garcia at the OIA championships so he certainly has some chops but Otero has been busy enough for it to all click at the right time. Gonsalves has been at 113 pounds as recently as two weeks ago.

Neither Nishigaya nor Kuratsu-Garcia made an appearance until January unless they wrestled at the Monalaua Duals, but they made up for it in February. Nishigaya won the ILH to make the Raiders even more forboding and Kuratsu-Garcia won a round robin at the end of January before taking second in his division and fourth at OIA. Kilkenny, the BIIF chap, drew a tough opponent in Baldwin’s Inouye. He struggled at MIT with a third-place finish but took second in the MIL to Panlasigui Domingo. With four leagues represented, anything could happen in this quad.

Garcia could very well be the top seed for his sustained excellence this year but the committee seems to encourage wrestlers to to sit out important tournaments because losing does more harm than winning does good. Garcia has certainly not sat on his laurels, taking the MIT with Panlasigui sitting out and returning to Oahu to finish second with Panlasigui not there, either. He has not lost since, taking the OIA East and Officials. Sheyden Kamalani Tomisano will have his hands full. Garcia is the only wrestler in this bracket to compete in Officials. Kahuku’s Chong has been steadily improving but dropped to sixth last week at the OIA championships. Chong entered the tournament when Mililani’s Nick Mason forfeited his last match.
