APRIL 24, 1995: Sean Murphy throws ILH race wide open

On this day in 1995, Sean Murphy hit a three-run home run and Mid-Pacific beat Kamehameha 8-3 to throw the ILH race into its usual chaos.

The victory created a three-way tie between Kamehameha, Mid-Pacific and Iolani at 15-4-1 with one game remaining in the season. Punahou was just one game behind them.

The leaders all won their games the next day, forcing a playoff. Murphy, who would go on to play for UH, drove in the lone run in Mid-Pacific’s win over Damien. Kamehameha beat Maryknoll 12-0 and Iolani pounded Punahou 16-0.

With the ILH receiving two state berths, Iolani ended up winning the league and Mid-Pacific took second to leave Kamehameha out in the cold.

The Owls eventually made it to the state final before a loss to Baldwin. The Bears beat Iolani 9-4 in the semifinals. Murphy went 3-for-5 with a home run to open the tournament and threw a shutout in the second game but committed a crucial error in the final.
