APRIL 5, 1960: Punahou’s Roy Soga shows his speed

Punahou shortstop Roy Soga had speed to spare in 1960.

On this date in 1960, Punahou shortstop Roy Soga collected three hits from the ninth spot in the order and stole four bases to help the Buffanblu batter McKinley in an ILH baseball contest.

Punahou was built behind all-star pitcher Norbie Mendes, who had pitched 30 inning without allowing a run to that point. He added 3 1/3 scoreless against the Tigers in relief of George Kellerman.

Punahou failed to make the state tournament when Saint Louis took the ILH by a game. The Buffanblu came back the next year with Soga leading off and won the ILH and state crowns under coach Jimmy Doole.

Complete info for the Wilcox who played 2b for Punahou. Was it Gaylord by chance. Also, I knew Norbie from basketball, didn’t know he pitched. My time was ’59 & ’60 Kauai High.

Yes, it was Gaylord Hart Wilcox. I think he went on to USC before coming home to get his masters at UH.
