Post-match: State finals, boys soccer

By Jerry Campany on February 15, 2010

. By Paul Honda Some post-match notes from the finals of the JN Automotive/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships. • The battle between Punahou’s stellar defenders, Cody Sia and Jon Cloutier, can’t be overstated. They know how to slow ‘Iolani’s standout scorer, Nick Goo, as well as any defenders. The three are teammates with the Honolulu Bulls club. “They have a solid defensive line,” Goo said after Punahou’s 1-0 win. “They tackle hard. They kind of know every move I’ll make.” […]

Pre-game: Honokaa/MPI, boys soccer

By Jerry Campany on February 13, 2010

By Paul Honda OK, to be accurate, there are no “games” in soccer. They are matches. As Honokaa and Mid-Pac square off for the Division II boys soccer state title (see OC 16 live), it’s interesting that the Dragons have a chance — long shot as they may be since Mid-Pac is the only team to beat Punahou this season (so far) — to surface as the first boys soccer state champ from the Big Island. Why is that worth […]

‘Iolani, Punahou play for the crown

By Jerry Campany on February 13, 2010

‘Iolani and Punahou struggle through the semifinals and will clash for the state championship. Photos by Jamm Aquino. [showtime] . By Paul Honda A little tight on space in the print edition, so here’s some extra goodies on Punahou’s 3-1 comeback win over Kealakehe in the semifinals of the JN Automotive/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships. • Punahou was scoreless for 57 minutes against a big, fast Kealakehe squad. Quintin Love’s goal gave Punahou all the insurance it needed with a […]

Post-game: Moanalua-Leilehua, boys hoops

By Jerry Campany on February 11, 2010

It’s one thing to knock off the frontrunners of your division, as the Leilehua Mules have done lately. It’s another to take the court, as they did at Moanalua last night, with a combination of height and athleticism in the front court, and good ballhandling in the backcourt. Leilehua is a team built to upset a season-long elite squad, which is what Moanalua is. It’s what makes the playoffs that much more interesting. For several minutes in the second quarter, […]

Post-game: Roosevelt-Moanalua, girls hoops

By Jerry Campany on February 10, 2010

It would seem that Roosevelt has hit a plateau and Moanalua is peaking. Seems. Based on last night’s battle, a 49-43 double-overtime epic, it could be reasonable to assume that stance. Here’s more about the game. • Moanalua mixed 1-3-1 and 2-3 zones to stifle Roosevelt, which was 6-for-18 from the 3-point arc. Though Mikela Thoemmes had 14 rebounds, Roosevelt’s edge on the glass was just 30-26. Each team had 20 turnovers. • Some coaches don’t buy into moral victories. […]

Post-game: ‘Iolani-Kamehameha, boys hoops

By Jerry Campany on February 5, 2010

Some additional notes and thoughts on last night’s battle at Kekuhaupi‘o Gym, a 67-63 win by No. 3 ‘Iolani over No. 1  Kamehameha. • ‘Iolani led big early and fought off a few Kamehameha runs. The visitors used straight halfcourt man-to-man defense from the opening tip and zoomed to a quick 14-5 lead. Kamehameha chipped away and took its first lead, 21-20, on a Christenson pull-up jumper midway through the second quarter. • ‘Iolani closed out the first half with an 9-0 […]

Pre-game: #3 ‘Iolani at #1 Kamehameha, boys hoops

By Jerry Campany on February 4, 2010

With Micah Christenson, the Kamehameha Warriors are on top of the world. Without him, they’re vulnerable. Tough, scrappy and very good, but capable of falling. On Dec. 29, the 6-foot-5 junior was away for a mainland volleyball trip, and ‘Iolani upended Kamehameha 57-46 in the final of Na Menehune Holiday Classic. With him, the Warriors beat the Raiders at ‘Iolani 49-47 on Jan. 12. Is it that simple? Mostly. But there are other factors. Here’s a look before the Raiders […]

Kahuku LOI Day: Jamora, Schwenke, Kaka

By Jerry Campany on February 3, 2010

The outgoing crop of football talent at Kahuku isn’t large this season, but there’s plenty of quality. Hauoli Jamora and Jackson Kaka made good on their initial commitments this morning. Jamora, the Star-Bulletin defensive player of the year, followed through and signed with Washington. Kaka inked his pact with New Mexico State. Meanwhile, Kona Schwenke finalized his agreement with Notre Dame, the late pursuer that put a twist into the recruiting puzzle. Schwenke originally committed to BYU, but other offers […]
