OIA Division II play begins Friday night with two games, including Pearl City at Roosevelt. The Chargers make their season debut under head coach Robin Kami against a Rough Riders squad that looked good in last week’s win over McKinley.

The Chargers have won the last three meetings by a combined score of 125-13. Roosevelt has won four in a row dating back to last season and is looking for its first five-game winning streak since 1999.

Roosevelt’s junior varsity team wins 2-0 after Pearl City just barely misses a 42-yard field goal with less than a minute remaining. Varsity kickoff approximately 7:55 p.m.


Roosevelt will receive opening kickoff.

Rough Riders three-and-out to start as Osi Talaifaga gets a big tackle for loss.

Sophomore Isaiah Asinsin starting at QB for the Chargers and he runs for 12 on third-and-10 for a first down. Kavosiee Mason makes a leaping grab near the sideline on third-and-10 but lands out of bounds and the Chargers punt.

Roosevelt picks up a first down as QB Shastyn Kekahuna hits RB Chavis Paia on a nice 20-yard screen pass. Three procedure penalties and an unsportsmanlike conduct call doom the drive and Roosevelt punts.

Sophomore RB Kobe Jackson rips off a 22-yard run for the Chargers. Asinsin scrambles to his right on third down and hit Calvin Mock for a big 28-yard pass play. Mock takes a big hit at the end by Bronson Naihe but holds on. Tala Moeone with a nice 27-yard TD run with 28 seconds left in the first quarter for Pearl City’s first TD of the season.

Christian Punsalan ends the next Roosevelt drive with a sack of the QB but the Rough Riders get it back after the punt hits a Chargers player. Roosevelt in the red zone. Kekahuna hits Shayne Teruya with a 14-yard TD pass and we’re tied with 10:28 left in first half.

Junior RB Joe Maneafaiga in for Pearl City on first offensive drive of second quarter. He picks up 15 and 19 yards on first two carries. He carries four times for 47 yards on drive but PC misses a 37-yard FG.

After a Roosevelt punt, PC has the ball on its own 16 with 2:47 remaining. Maneafaiga with a 23-yard run on third-and-1 and PC calls timeout with 37 seconds left on the Roosevelt 42. Asinsin drops the snap and recovers but wastes valuable time. Maneafaiga with an 11-yard run to midfield and we go to halftime.

Pearl City gets the ball first. Chargers running it with all three backs on first drive as Moenoe, Jackson and Maneafaiga all get carries. Chargers draw Roosevelt offsides on third-and-4 to pick up a first down on the Roosevelt 29. Mana Kahooilihala makes a TD-saving tackle of Maneafaiga at the 16. Maneafaiga over 100 yards but Pearl City called for a hold and a personal foul after the play to make it first-and-28. Third-and-20 from the 26 and Asinsin goes deep to Israel Kaleo who catches it but is on the back line of the end zone. Incomplete. Fourth-and-20 and they try the same play but Brendan Namba with a great defensive play to knock it down. Roosevelt ball.

Roosevelt 3-and-out. Chargers drive again but continue to shoot selves in foot near the red zone. Asinsin drops a snap that leads to a 7-yard loss and now it’s fourth-and-8 at the Roosevelt 18. Decision time for Chargers with 1:11 left in third quarter. Zameer Khan’s 35-yard FG is wide left.

Third quarter ends. Roosevelt runs only five plays on offense in quarter. Rough Riders three-and-out after incomplete pass to start fourth.

Chargers start next drive on Roosevelt 42 after recovering their own fumble on the punt. Kahooilihala has a possible pick-six go off his fingertips. Maneafaiga with a 24-yard run on third down to get to the Roosevelt 15. 175 rush yards for him now. Pearl City runs it on next five plays and Alosina Toomalatai scores from 4 yards out on his first carry, Maneafaiga did most of the work though and is up to 187 rush yards.

Three straight Paia runs results in Roosevelt’s first first down of the second half. Toomalatai stops Kekahuna on third down and forces a punt.

Maneafaiga up to 199 rushing yards but Pearl City will punt with 3:14 remaining.

Zion Tupuola-Fetui with the third-down sack and Roosevelt punts from its own 18 with 2:17 remaining.


Maneafaiga with a 12-yard run to get to 211. Single-game school record is 216 held by Antoin Dewalt. 1:59 remaining. He gets no yards on next carry. Roosevelt calls timeout. Rough Riders have one left I believe.

Maneafaiga gets the first down with a 6-yard carry to get to 217 yards breaking the single-game school record by 1 yard. Pearl City will take knees. Chargers win 14-7.
