A bit confusing. Picture caption “Moanalua’s Austin Matautia, right, is the OIA East boys volleyball player of the year.” And first sentence of article reads “…Austin Matautia of Moanalua and Max Aiono of Leilehua are the OIA’s East and West boys volleyball players of the year…” I think you have it reversed since the list of all star selections have it:

    OIA East
    Player of the year
    >> Max Aiono, Leilehua

    OIA West
    Player of the year
    >> Austin Matautia, Moanalua

First team all star selection for the OIA West team included Micah Talamoa and Zavier Lieb.
For you information, Talamoa was a Middle Hitter and Lieb was their starting setter. You have Talamoa as a setter and Lieb as a libero. You would be able to see this if you watch the OC16 broadcasts this year.

Just wanted info on all star selections…Who picks the players? I noticed that in the ILH Division II All StarsVolleyball selection, they picked a player from St. Francis as the MVP. St. Francis had a record of 5 wins and 6 loses in the regular season and finished in 4th place. They beat Damien in a playoff and was able to play in the state playoffs. Punahou II finished in 2nd place this year losing only to HBA the state champion and only had one player represented on the 2nd team. Punahou II could not enter the state playoff because they of an ILH rule of having more thant one team entered in state playoff competition. Punahou II finished as the 10th best team in the state of Hawaii but they were woefully under represented in the ILH All Star selection this year. No Punahou player were selected to the first team yet players from Damien, Hanalani, Iolani and St. Francis had players selected. The kids deserve more…

League all-stars are selected by league coaches.

Thank you for your quick response. It appears that Punahou was left out of the selection process. Are they selecting 3 players from St. Francis on the first and second team because they representedd the ILH in the state playoffs. Punahou II beat St Francis quite easily and Punahou II captured the McKinley tournament which had 20 teams including Leileihua, Roosevelt, Kaiser, MidPacific,Mililani and Kauai. Punahou II also beat Kamehameha Kapalama in the Iolani Volleball tournament this year…It is easy to say the coaches selected the players but is it right…..Yes I am a Punahou II fan…..I don’t begrudge any of the selected All Stars but
I am disappointed that our team did not get the recognition it deserved….Was it their coaches fault, I don’t think so……
