Hawaii wrestler Tiare Ikei will represent Team USA at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games.
The event is being held for the third time. This year, it’s Oct. 12-14 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Ikei will wrestle in the 49-kilogram (approximately 108 pounds) division
Ikei has been on a tear recently. After winning the 2018 Hawaii state championship at 112 pounds, she won gold at the U.S. women’s national championships in Irving, Texas, and at the Pan-American Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
Then, Ikei — a former Hawaii Technology Academy student who wrestled for Kaiser — took the bronze medal at the Cadet World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia.
Ikei also announced recently that she is forgoing her senior year in Hawaii and a chance to defend her state title. Instead, she is moving to Colorado to train at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. She will be attending a charter school there.
Next up for Ikei: the U.S. Women’s Cadet and Junior National Team Training Camp in Fresno, Calif., next week.
