But I believe the school and the coaches owe it to these talented kids to challenge them. Other than 1-2 teams, there is not competition for MPI in D2. And when you add in the D3 teams they have to play, it’s just a waste of time. Hopefully winning will generate interest at the intermediate and JV level for the Owls.

Gym and court time is already a challenge at MPI and until they are able to building capacity at the intermediate and JV level, D–2 is the correct placement. Most of the D-1 team players at ILH schools are involved in b-ball (clubs) year round, where as MPI students are encourage to be involved in various extra curricular activities…………Innovators, Artists, Individuals.

They have the talent. Maryknoll will be loaded next year. Kamehameha will be big, but lack guard play. Iolani has some tools, but are yearly underachievers. Sacred Hearts have some nice pieces, but didn’t win a league game. And Punahou graduated 4/5 starters and their program is in a huge mess with no help in sight. Plus they have a inexperienced coach who shows no sings of knowing anything more than the local i9 mom or dad coaching.

MPI has one of the top players in the state in Kovaloff. The big girl is good and performs her role. I am not sure if the pg can handle pressure from legit D1 teams yet. And their bench is not bad. They lack depth at the post though.

I think the school, coach, and athletic department owes it to the kids to move up. They deserve the chance to compete with the best.
