It NEVER belonged there. Not only will it be great to see another team win the D2 title (and EARN it for a change), it’ll be entertaining to see Iolani take on teams that it OUGHT to take on. Don’t give me this “Iolani will lose every game they play against Punahou, St. Louis, and Kamehameha by 65 points” BS. Iolani’s got a better chance of BEATING one or two of them than losing by 20 points each time they face off against the Big Three. Take that as a COMPLIMENT Iolani D2 backers. And for those of you that think Iolani belongs in D2 and does not recruit, PUT THE CRACK PIPE DOWN. First of all, don’t you realize that going after small, SPEEDY players is a form of recruiting? Second of all, Iolani fielded its biggest team since Donny Mateaki was in uniform for them. Did last year’s team look as though it didn’t have any recruits? I think we all know the answer to that. And let me give you the last time Iolani played Punahou, St. Louis, and Kamehameha twice in the same season: 1999. They BEAT Punahou (and lost to them by just 12 in the other meeting) and came within a FIELD GOAL of beating Kamehameha. The same Kamehameha team that clobbered St. Louis, 30-6, and only lost two games. They lost the other Kamehameha game by all of 14 points. One of the stars of that team–Abu Maafala–told me playing against Iolani gave him as much trouble as playing against Punahou or St. Louis. The ONLY team that hammered them on a regular basis was St. Louis. I think we’ll see more of the same in 2015. Iolani’s got as much business playing teams like St. Francis, Pac-Five, and Damien as UH does playing the Seahawks or Colts!
