In our islands our parents try their best to send us to school and for us kids to try to learn their best, at home they try their best to teach us the best they know. My Dad went as far as 7th grade my Mom 11th grade but the education I learn at home I’ll be able to survived any place in the world, my education from school made me able to support my family. I didn’t succeed in sport, I seen something else in life and is was to become a leader or a head of a company, couldn’t get help for education, so I have pay for it on my own and go night classes. These kids trying their best thru sports so they extend their education to be success in life, be great community leaders and a great family leader. Our Heavenly Father continue to bless our Keiki guide them and protect. Amem.

aitorahi: the article doesn’t say that tata is raising the gpa to a 2.5 minimum and then 3.0 minimum in order to play. It also was written before tata even got to kahuku. But it does confirm that kahuku raised the minimum gpa to 2.3, which nobody disputed.

i don’t really buy the 3.0 minimum gpa rule. that would cripple any football team in the state. including ILH teams (where a 3.0 is actually much harder to achieve than in public school). Kahuku, on its website, even says that only around 30% of its team is scoring a 3.0 or above.

Action Jackson: grow up. more than one person on this planet can have opinions different than yours. especially when you say really crazy things like “academics are a very small part of high school. you don’t use anything you learn in high school anyway. i’m proud of my 2.3 gpa and whatever state championship team i was a part of while i didnt’ do school work.”

SimpleSimon, the minimum elegibilty GPA for all other schools athletics is 2.0. Kahuku is the only one with a 2.3 and they will be raising it to a 2.5 next year. Coach Vae will be requiring his players to have a minimum of 3.0 to play.
Spartan, Kahuku is raising the bar in small increments but at least they are raising it. I know many kids on the team who had a 3.0 and higher last year. It’s too bad you need to bash a school and the students who are actually improving on their academics. Looking forward to finding out who you/ education first really are. Until then keep hiding behind your keyboard and continue hating on the Red Raider Nation. Bumbai you learn.

WOW… Very sad that an article about a FOOTBALL GAME, quickly turned into bashing a school/program for scheduling said game?!?! I’m not a Kahuku Graduate nor do I live in Hauula, Laie or Kahuku, so I will not pretend to understand the passion of “Red Raider Nation”. I do however, realize and respect the GREATNESS of their program, and come Sept. 17th I WILL be cheering for those boys!! Go get em Kahuku!!
