Although football runs athletics, the ILH would not consider separating because it would mean complete separation from HHSAA and all the other sports would not be able to compete for “State” championships. The state tournament “formula” concept will always rule, at least for the next 20 years or so until statewide all the old school ADs retire. (But will probably never go away, because most ADs or new ADs are former coaches that benefitted from or coached under the “formula”, at least the non-ILH ones which composes of about 80% statewide)

Having the best teams compete for championships is appealing to the public, but not so for the leagues. Championships are not always the best 2 teams as evidenced in professional sports (Warriors/Cavs, but not Rockets, Red Sox/Dodgers, but not the Astros, and if you say but they had a chance, Punahou does too, if they beat St. Louis. Or remember in ’93 when the the 103 wins Giants team didn’t even qualify for the NLCS because the Braves won the division with 104 wins)

Punahou beat down Campbell and Mililani this year and would so in virtually every year. STL as usual is on another level. Dafun is right and HI Born’s metrics are bogus. Why not choose the best teams in the state regardless of their league affiliation and if the ILH has 2 or 3 teams in the Open and 2 teams in Div 1 accept it and get better. People also forget or ignore that the HHSAA equalizes the disparity between the ILH and OIA by juicing the sh!t out of the playoffs and championship games anyway. If not, then let both leagues fully separate and see how much interest HI sports fans have in prep football at that point.

Is it fair that 2 out of 3 teams in ilh make it or 3 our of 6 from oia. 50% of a league is better than 66%…more fair..and punahou ILH doesnt always have top 2 teams…its not based on how a certain season goes and you make the rules on the go..its about having rules/guidelines set ahead of time.
