Just so fortunate to call them friends. Rest in Love Carl. Bryson Ohana, you all left such a wonderful mark on the entire Waimea Community. Mahalo!

He left out the heart that he, Bill, Paul, and Hugh put into all of their pieces. We were still in a print heyday then in the Nineties, and many on the Big Island lived through the articles they wrote, which made the games bigger than any on TV. I can still remember most of the plays and the players in that game, much as I do in our loss in 83 to Kona on the same field. The families that supported our team and David’s were extended and committed. Each group lived or died with the teams ‘ success. The emotional nature of Big Island football was an extension of the heart of all of those involved, coaches, players, families, and reporters. My chief shout out goes to my wife, who reared boys that went on to be all-stars and stalked my sidelines with dedication. She stuck with me for the three decades I coached. I was blessed.

As a former colleague of Command, I have always regarded his reporting skills as among the best I have known in more than 35 years in journalism. Now, with this pivotal game recalled of a premier bygone era in BIIF sports, I know more about the tremendous athlete Carl (and his extraodinary coach and father) as well as some of the many people who competed with and against Carl, and all who were fortunate to have been graced by his presence during his far too short life. -30-

What a beautiful article by Bobby Command. Pete and I remember the many years he walked the sidelines and captured the “real game and the real stories” of the young men who played football on the Big Island.
