Thanks for the lesson, except it was not needed. My family that again lives in all these areas and attended all these schools simultaneously for different reasons. We have always referenced ourselves as North Shore pride and never eastside. RRL yes is a new thing that was started when our former state champion football and wrestling coach was still there.
Families have sent their children to private schools for many reasons, the full bus load going to Kapalama everday since forever will attest to that. This divisiveness is new, this claim that Kahauku has not had college ready players is the football coaches fault and not the parents is not.
To blame a coach or a school for a students failures in class is dissapointing and one would hope the parent would look at oneself instead of blaming others.
My nephews and nieces were never enemies and never will be, they are just simple competitive rivals playing a game against each other. How lucky we are to have so many talented players from our community that excel on so many teams across the island.
Football, volleyball,wrestling,etc…
To feel betrayed by another persons oppurtunity is called jealousy and hope you meant another word. To think a family must choose between a proven higher educational institute with access to more classes needed to attend most universities against palying on a football
team is a personal choice. No betrayal, just choices that a parent makes for their children.
Please dont make it any more than that.
Regarless of the winner saturday, north shore pride will be on display.

Geographically the town of Kahuku is the northern most tip of the island and that is why the townies call Kahuku high school the “north shore school”, So our district which spans from Sunset beach to Laie, Hauula and Kaaawa get lumped up into being considered north shore when in fact Laie/Hauula/Kaaawa is really on the east facing shores of Oahu. The article above that is talking about north shore football kids transferring to Punahou is really talking about the Laie/Hauula kids, but once again because of the high schools geographic location they refer to us as north shore kids.

As a Hauula resident and Alumni of Kahuku we are Red Raiders and not North Shore. “Red Raider for Life” refers to the diehard commitment we have to the High Schools sports teams (more particularly football) as former players and now as parents of current players. The term “Red Raider for Life” was adopted by the NFL Oakland raiders who coined that phrase “Raiders for Life”, we adopted it because of the similarity of the word RAIDERS, now days you see other football schools around Hawaii that use the same phrase “trojan for life”, “sabers for life”, “mules for life”, which is ridiculous because there is no similarity to the word raiders so we just take it as a compliment that they copy us. Another deeper meaning to the saying “Red Raider for Life” and how it all started is when Siuaki Livai became the head coach and started winning championships, Siuaki is a Alumni and for us to have an Alumni at the head of the ship leading us to a football championship reinforced the whole meaning of what it was to be a born and bred “Red Raider”, after him Coach Reggie Torres took over and he also is an Alumni that took us to win state titles so as you can see we rose to the top by using our own players and our own coaches. Once again “trojan for life”, “sabers for life”, “mules for life” are schools that do not have their own alumni as head coaches so they really can’t relate or understand what it means the be “For Life!”.

We take football very serious and we train our boys from a young age to represent Red Raider football when they get older. If you think about our distance from any other major towns and cities we are really isolated and we feel that we are ostracized from the rest of Oahu. When many of our star football players transfer or get “recruited” to play at a private school we are disappointed almost to the point of feeling betrayed, however these star players are our friends and neighbors and we cant hate them so instead of pointing the blame on them we point it at the source of their transfer, the private schools who headhunt and pick the best athletes from our community to go and play for them.

As a former player myself divisiveness has always existed on the field, if you are not wearing red you are my enemy no matter where you from. Football is a gladiator sport so if you think hugs and kisses are going to prelude the competition then you are wrong. However after the game and after the season of course we are friends with everyone, in fact those kids that transfer to private schools are our sons, cousins, nephews.

Like Coach Leslie stated he’s still trying to figure out the culture of the community and the school, if he does his job as he says he will then that will mean more of our kids will graduate with higher gpa’s and more will get football scholarships and as a parent myself I can agree to that and understand why our principal had to make this change.

We know kids that attend Castle,Kailua,Kamehmeha,St louis, and Punahou all for different reasons. The constant is the community and not the school. Shame on our coach trying to start divisiveness between us when it never has exisited before. We love all our boys regardless of school.

If not you, then who? If not now, when? Whether in elementary, high school or college… friends, family or teammates move. We often wonder about the what if’s and could have beens…that’s human nature. It is also human nature to point the finger and blame someone else for something. What it comes down to is choice, and we have to respect the choices that others make whether we like it or not. We celebrate the success our young men and women have whether at Kahuku or any other school they may be at. We also look forward to seeing them in college and wherever else life takes them. We wish the best for them all and know that they may not all wear the red and white, but they are still Red Raiders for Life.

They shouldn’t be sour gripes about their peers leaving to Private Schools. Be happy for them. Like they’ve always said “We Don’t Rebuild, We Reload.”. The RED SEA needs to just worry about their current team and not ponder on the What If’s because you have a great group of kids playing on that Kahuku Varsity football team… PERIOD!!!

Some parents did not have what we as parents today have. Yes we too struggle but we see the world different. We have access thru computers, media ect….to become capable of bettering ourselves. And because of this, kahuku is actually trying change the academic structure. Not saying they weren’t trying in the past but it’s more reachable now. And kahuku is trying to be a public school that can offer our kids what the private can. But it will need help and guidance from their parents. They need to be more involved with the academic part of their child’s athletic life as well.

Yes High School football is Life and we are all Al Bundy’s!
