Excellence and Success – whether it be academic or athletic both come from the same well-springs of hard work, team-first approach and sacrifice. Both endeavors ( along with fine arts, music, JROTC, chess club and everything else) are mutually supportive to the future survival and continued legacy of St. Louis HS. Go with your strengths and the rest will follow.

Prior to him leaving that support structure changed from within the school because the school thought Cal had too much power and control. The success of the football program was the key factor in drawing enrollment to the school and academics fell on the way side. Since his departure a lot has been done to try to rebuild the academic reputation with only mild success. The school was known for being the best of the private-public schools which of course there is no such thing. Football has fallen flat along with the drop in enrollment like a crashing plane. Their graduation class is around a 100 boys (probably less) and academics are average. They could easily have qualified for DII along time ago. Of course they always have a few very outstanding kids but that is the exception and that is way they are failing to make the grade. Most of my classmates have sent their kids to other private schools and very few will even consider their alma mater. At one time the school had nearly 3 times the number of 9th graders. I think as a desperate financial countermeasure they are going back to the ways of the old school where football is king.

Wish I had more sons to play for Coach Cal. Truly a remarksble man who instilled confidence and a winning attitude in his players through Pride and Perfection!

in years past.
