Everyone here would agree with me too

Northshore — the reason we don’t have separate rankings is that this state is the only one that has DIFFERENT criteria for classification from league to league. The OIA uses power ratings, i.e. composite win-loss record (two-year span), which is against the general guideline of the National Federation of High Schools. But it works for the OIA and its 22 football programs.

The ILH uses a blended formula for its own classification rules. The KIF, BIIF and MIL, all have their own unique classification rules. It wasn’t long ago that Campbell played Division II football. One of the largest enrollments in the state, playing in the division that had the smallest programs.

When the leagues have a consistent, uniform criteria, it will make sense for us to divide the rankings.

All you can do is play your schedule. And I will tell you, when I played, yes, it did make a difference if and where we were ranked, because being positively recognized is always an honor, especially in the media. It also gives the team a goal to move up, or hold your position. Damien, Iolani, Waipahu cannot win the open division state championship, but maybe they can be ranked higher than some of those open teams. Same for Div II teams (I’m thinking St. Francis).

Iolani/Damien would no doubt lose to Kahuku and Saint Louis had they played Waianae’s schedule. But we should also chill. Damien looks pretty solid, while Kapolei has all loses. I understand Kapolei plays a tough schedule but it is hard to rank a team with zero loses. Take UCF for example. Should they have been not ranked at all just cause they aren’t in the SEC, but a team with all losses in the SEC be ranked over UCF? Its hard to rank teams with all loses even tho playing in a harder division. I always root for the underdogs so I’ll make a case for ‘Iolani (at the moment). Last thing, I understand Waianae had a bad beginning last year then went off in the post season. But Waianae lost to Waipahu, and I saw Iolani destroyed Waipahu. So being unbiased, that has to count for something. I understand schedules are hard to evaluate, but based off that Iolani deserves a little respect or at least for now, Waianae fans shouldn’t be trashing schools like Waipahu or Iolani. (Thats at the moment right now, I’m sure playoffs Waianae will be a different team)

Until the rankings are done by divisions, this ranking is useless. Instead of waiting for the Star Advertiser to rank the teams by divisions, why don’t someone who is knowledgeable about Hawai’i’s prep football scene start one. Then, post the rankings. Maybe the conversations will then be more meaningful. Just a thought.

There will always be some teams that got excluded that deserved to go and some teams that made it that didn’t deserve to go.
I think there should be top 5 rankings for each division, but some would argue that too. I think Kapolei would probably beat Damien and Iolani, but unfortunately, they don’t play each other this year. This makes me think of the Sugar Bowl appearance by UH….Bows were good in their conference and played well outside it, but didn’t wouldn’t do well against one of the best in the country, just like ILH Div 1 teams are doing well in State Div 1, but would probably take their lumps in Open Div. Still, props to Iolani and Damien…you can only play the games on your schedule. I’d also like to see Div 1 State Champ play 3rd place team in Open, but that will never happen.
