Your determination seems to be that Coach Smith was out of contract, Coach Akina was in contract. The similarity that I saw was that both had kids/parents unhappy, both kids/parents took their complaints to the admin, both admins decided to give the Coach stipulations in order to be the coach the following year… Then how the coaches went from there differ.

I agree with your thoughts on the why there are more Kahuku comments.

But assuming that people are being truthful, many people come on here talking about Kahuku. If you have more representation the topics will be more static. You hardly see anything written about Kaiser, Kailua, Nanakuli, Waianae, etc. But if they had a lot of posters on this site from those areas you would notice a large spike in the topics regarding those respective schools.

It’s hard to draw parallels between the two. I believe the OIA (DOE) doesn’t offer a new 1 year contract to the Basketball Coaches until a little while before the season ends. I believe the contract ends after the state tournament. Coach Smith was possibly out of season and not under contract. From what I have been told, Coach Akina is currently under contract and was put on “suspension” during season. I think that is why he is trying to file a wrongful termination suit. I read that he is suspended. If he is suspended and not fired, I don’t believe he can file a wrongful termination suit. Based on what has been disclosed in the community and media (assuming it is correct) I believe he can sue for defamation of character, possibly libel, and possibly punitive damages. It would be hard to prove damages though. So I see the best he can get is his coaching job back.

For Coach Smith, I was told that before his new coaching contract was to be finalized there were coaching stipulations they wanted him to adhere to. I don’t think he agreed with the rules set forth for him so he decided not to accept the contract and decided to go elsewhere.

As you can see the two are not similar at all, other than both coaches are no longer coaching at the schools they were at last year.

Why so little about Kalaheo and trash talking about those kids, parents, admin and community (I’m not saying there should be… I am making an observation that there shouldn’t be so much trash talk about Kahuku’s). Obviously there were people who disagreed with Coach Smith and he won it all last year. It doesn’t get better than that.

It will give you a better understanding of where he is coming from.

No coach gets into it so he can play his kid. Nor does any coach do it for the $$$. All the time they put in, and make so little money. And the coaches got to put up with stuff like this. Auwe.

Oh and of course he decided against suing, he went to look for another job elsewhere that he could be utilized.
