While visiting Hawaii a few years back I had a chance to walk on to the football field I played on so many times. Many memories. I was very happy to see “ Alex Kane Stadium “ on a sign over the gate. We’ll deserved honor.

I though of Mr. Kane a bit over all these years. One time he walked in when me and John Kalama were attempting to access the old, broken, Coca Cola Machine in the locker room. Somehow John backed off and I was left with my hand in the machine. That was not a good experience. I thought it was the end of wrestling for me. But, he let it ride with a warning……One day I had to ask him a question and walked into his office without knocking and found him and another teacher in a “precocious position.” I apologized and left. We were good after that. But, before and after he was always warm to me. I suppose that is one of the qualities that he will always be remembered for.

I graduated from Kailua High over 40 years ago and Alex Kane was and always will be Mr. Kane to me – he commanded that much respect. I was lucky enough to play both football and baseball for him. The discipline he instilled (and demanded) in our teams made me a better person.

Thanks for all the life lessons – RIP Mr. Kane.

One of the all time legends of Hawaii high school coaching. You got to put him right up there with Larry Ginoza, Don Botelho and Cal Chai.
I never knew he coached baseball too.

Unlike some others who have gyms, baseball and football stadiums named after them this man really deserves the honor and more. He touched the lives of so many kids.
