Six-time defending Division I state boys volleyball champion Punahou is predictably the No. 1 seed for the New City Nissan/HHSAA Boys Volleyball State Championships that begin Monday.

Waianae and Mililani are the two Oahu teams that will travel for opening-round games. The Trojans will play at Maui High at 5:30 p.m. on Monday while the Seariders will face Kamehameha-Hawaii at 4 p.m. on the Big Island.

OIA champion Moanalua is the No. 2 seed, followed by MIL champion Kamehameha-Maui as the No. 3 seed and BIIF champion Kealakehe as the No. 4 seed.

Kealakehe won the BIIF title with a five-set win over KS-Hawaii on Wednesday night. Anthony Trevino led Kealakehe with 30 kills and Isaiah Hooper hit .393 with 25 kills.

KIF champion Kapaa earned the top seed in the Division II tournament, ahead of ILH champion St. Francis.

I’m wondering why the press and followers of this sport don’t make a bigger deal of Punahou dominating so much? Recruiting?

It is obvious they have the best players every year. The only mystery for the state tournament this year is who will finish second place. I’m surprised Iolani does not declare for D2 already.

Punahou Volleyball does not have to recruit. They’re at a point where kids will just go there to play volleyball. Iolani declaring D2 makes no sense. They are a LEGIT D1 program.

^^^ This leads me to ask, is everybody who is closely involved in this sport fine and dandy with Punahou dominating on such a high level?

Rules and schedules for other sports are constantly being changed to avoid teams from dominating but nobody really says anything about boys volleyball. It just seems like all the other schools are cool with playing for second place every year. Let’s be real and honest here – it will look like men vs boys in every match Punahou plays of this state tournament. This is called the state championships but it will not be competitive.

Falcon Future: So what’s your solution? It’s not Punahou’s “fault” that they dominate at volleyball.
