we should always offer the top 1-2 local players every year, regardless of height or need. They aren’t always going to accept the offer (like this year) but we need to offer them. If we can’t win with a couple local players on the roster, interest will dwindle and wahine vball will matter less in the future, no matter how many big west titles we compete for. If the perception of UH ever becomes that they don’t care about the local athletes, it will be the beginning of the end. We are already seeing it in football.

Oxtail01 unlike Granato who is an amazing outside hitter for her size, Saige was being recruited by several PAC 12 schools as a setter and not the outside hitter that you’ve been seeing or read about through out her years at Iolani. These big time schools understand the type of athletes that come from the islands and are able to get every inch/ounce out of them. Maybe that old school mentality is why McKenzie Milton is breaking records at Central Florida instead of UH!

Bigger players are not always the answer and UH’s program doesn’t draw them. Nobody wants to play for UH that’s why most girls leave to go to the mainland. There are bigger girls at PAC-12 schools where these “Player of the Year” girls are ending up. These girls are making impacts and bigger programs want them, why not go.

UH doesn’t need another short local “player of the year” when they already have one in Granato. We all know how that turns out (ok, but not great). What UH needs are 6’4″ players from the Mainland with power and they don’t have to be “player of the year” to have a more positive impact for UH.
