Is it political? I don’t know, but it is biased. Who you saw, when and what you perceived on those occasions. Who votes? Normally it is coaches and they are biased for sure.
These are problems universally and are always voiced by ones with an axe to grind or some other agenda. Sportsmanship is most often displayed by players; not parents.

Padding is up in the 3rd qtr 50-0 and you leave your starters in and continue to throw for more touchdowns. To have a chance to win Iolani needed Elena in to score, play defense, pass and serve. Most volleyball fans can see that. Kaylei didn’t have to shoulder that role. Both are magnificent players. For Kamehameha Devin was the more dominant hitter and Kaylei was the leader and all around player. Praise these homegrown talent and role models for our future Hawaii girls. There’s enough critics out there.

“Keonilei came out on top and eliminated Oglivie from her first and only missed post-season.” This is a team sport right? I thought it was Kamehameha vs Iolani. Not to get off track; I believe Devin was selected by OC16 as the player of that match. Soares was crisp on her sets, solid blocking and good decision making. Tara was unreal in her defense with Kaylei and the other Kamehameha DS picking up bombs all night. This match went 5 finishing 17-15 with great defense play from both sides. The Iolani libero can’t remember her name was a stud that match too. One of the best high level matches ever in Hawaii High School volleyball.

So it’s evident you have hit a personal button with local1boy.

We should all stick to celebrating these great players. It’s been a treat to watch them.

“She was the dominant player in the matches she played. She was dominant against Kamehameha and was the best player on the court in the 3 set sweep and 5 set loss. That’s what you are really talking about aren’t you? Kamehameha ended up with 4 players on the FAB 15 and ‘Iolani had 1. Kudos to them.”

Oglivie was the dominant player because 90% of ‘Iolani’s sets go to her. Look at her stats she is getting most of the opportunities. It was a knock on Kamehameha because they shared the wealth amongst various players? I bet you Keonilei could have been a stat padder too if Kamehameha set her 80-90% of the game. It was ‘Iolani’s own doing why they had just one player in the Fab 15. When the ILH title was on the line in the head to head matchup, Keonilei came out on top and eliminated Oglivie from her first and only missed post-season. Then, the same week, she led her team to a win over Punahou. And then did it again a few weeks later for the state title. She was hands down the last girl standing on top of the mountain when the season wrapped up. That’s all you and I need to acknowledge. She dominated and did everything any girl in the future needs to do to win the girls’ volleyball POY title.

Tell that to Mike Trout, Barry Sanders, Wayne Gretzky, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, all of them won MVP on teams that didn’t make the playoff that year. All of them by the way will be if not already Hall of Famers too. Tried to mix it up with multiple sports to add to the point.

As for this year you are really talking about volleyball aren’t you since you pointed to Kaylei. That’s what you are pitching right? Both Elena and Kaylei are great players and led their teams. I will knock one player down to lift up over another. I can’t keep up with the ILH format for voting but both players are deserving. We wouldn’t be having this conversation if Elena played the whole season vice playing on the national team. That changed the scale for the High School volleyball season. That seems to be the chatter but that we can only speculate since it didn’t happen BUT the signs are there. She was the dominant player in the matches she played. She was dominant against Kamehameha and was the best player on the court in the 3 set sweep and 5 set loss. That’s what you are really talking about aren’t you? Kamehameha ended up with 4 players on the FAB 15 and ‘Iolani had 1. Kudos to them.

I agree it’s not all about scoring. By the way there’s pre-season, regular season and post season.

“Go easy”. Nah you just chill. If you are going to get bestowed one of the “PLAYER OF THE YEAR” awards, you should be around when the post-season does. If you’re not, that means there are a ton of other players just as talented as you who are still playing while you’re season is done. Those are the cream of the crop who made it out. That year in boy’s basketball, the ILH got THREE births so there were no excuses for that “player of the year” to have taken his team to the state tournament. Let’s end that trend now. Otherwise, you’re telling the entire state that what you do in pre-season matters more than post-season. Bottom line: just score a lot that’s all this state watches for anyway.

I am curious what you mean by the ILH all stars being political. It seems like you are using the Fab 15 as the authority to say ILH all star selections were wrong. I thought the ILH picks all stars by having all the league coaches meet to discuss it. I know Hawaii Prep World doesn’t watch all the matches so I assume they consult with certain coaches from the ILH and OIA to come up with the Fab 15, which is why we see different results. If that’s the case, isn’t the Fab 15 political too? I am curious as to why you think the selection method of the Fab 15 is more reliable than the ILH’s method. Maybe I am missing something.

Go easy, all of these sports you are pointing to are team oriented sports. At the professional and amateur ranks their have been MVP selected for teams that didn’t make the playoffs. The young man that was the basketball Gatorade player of the year was dominant. But as a team sport you have variables outside your control. The state playoff system is broken. It’s based on % of teams per each league to get into states vice the best overall teams across the state. This is an issue in football, volleyball, basketball….etc. Punahou arguably is the 2nd best team in football this year. They are on the outside looking in at states.

Last year, the player who was awarded the ILH league MVP AND state tourney most outstanding player (whose team also won the D1 championship) lost both POY awards to a guy who didn’t even make the state tournament. This trend of giving POY to players who aren’t around for the post season needs to stop.
