When you look at the history of Hawaii cross country state championship teams–going back to the 1960s–only one championships team in state history has ever been coached by a woman, and that was almost 40 years ago! And no girls championship team (regardless of division) has ever been coached by a woman, going back to 1973.

So Coach Tanaka is just the second woman EVER to head a state championship squad, a development that is long overdue in the land of Patsy Matsu Mink, a founding mother of Title IX, and the first Asian-American woman to serve in Congress. Thank you, Paul, for mentioning this detail in your story, and for giving an extended voice to Coach Tanaka, whose bright coaching future we all look forward to. Go Eagles!
