ILH volleyball scoreboard: Thursday, Mar. 25

By Paul Honda on March 25, 2021

Maryknoll’s three-set win over ‘Iolani, 16-25, 25-21, 25-23, was a big win for the Spartans and Coach Andrew Ah Yee. “The biggest plus is having Zion Bruce back. He added another big block to the front row. Together with Alex Parks, they both maintained the net,” Ah Yee said. “There are no surprises in our team because our boys worked hard this week executing and fine tuning our offense and defense. Later, at Hemmeter Fieldhouse, Punahou’s girls left their mark […]

Mid-Pacific volleyball boys exceeding Coach Dave Stamp’s expectations

By Paul Honda on March 21, 2021

Punahou left Mills Gymnasium on Saturday with a 25-17, 24-26, 25-10 win. The deep, talented Buffanblu created a different tone in the second set by starting and playing reserves. That helped the Owls showcase their game. Reyn Miyazawa led MPI with 16 kills, two aces and one block. Caleb Law added seven kills, […]

Kamehameha hosts Maryknoll in ILH boys volleyball opener

By Paul Honda on March 20, 2021

Through the decades, Randy Nako has seen just about every combination of skill sets and talent on a volleyball court. The Kamehameha boys volleyball coach never saw anything like the spring of 2020, though. When the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I season begins on Saturday, the Warriors will host Maryknoll in an 11:30 a.m., best-of-three matchup. “It feels great to be able to have a full ILH season. Both the coaching staff and players are excited and working hard […]

The long path back leads to the ’21 league opener against Hawaii Baptist on Saturday. Soaring back: Hawaii Baptist boys open ILH season at ‘Iolani

By Paul Honda on March 19, 2021

For years, the Eagles of Hawaii Baptist Academy were the big fish in the small pond. The small private school in Nuuanu Valley developed a volleyball program that gave other Division II programs an inkling of what consistency and commitment to excellence could do. The Eagles dominated D-II and, on occasion, took on the powerhouses of D-I of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. These days, HBA is locked into a well-earned spot among the D-I giants. Longtime coach Teoni Obrey […]

Punahou boys volleyball dynasty opens new chapter on Saturday

By Paul Honda on March 18, 2021

Rick Tune has seen plenty in his decades as a volleyball player and coach. He won’t be changing his tune, so to speak, no matter what the circumstances around the Punahou Buffanblu. One year after high school volleyball season was cancelled, the eight-time defending state champions will be back on the hardwood to open the Interscholastic League of Honolulu regular season against Mid-Pacific. The match will begin at 2:30 p.m. in Mills Gymnasium. No spectators will be allowed, per COVID-19 […]
