mks, as I’ve written a few times, the onus is on administrators from the leagues to work with the HHSAA. The HHSAA sets its state-tournament dates months and months ahead of time.

In the BIIF’s situation, there were plenty of other dates available. Friday. Monday. Even earlier on Saturday (since I’ve been told that HPA doesn’t have Saturday/half-day school any more.)

But obviously the BIIF and Konawaena could or would not budge. Maxing out the revenue on a Saturday night was more important than possibly losing a portion of that $4,000 or $5,000 (or more) in revs. So be it. Judging by the lack of response from the school — neither the AD nor the principal have returned my calls – they are just happy and fine with the way things turned out financially.

I was not implying that the other sports take precedence over girls basketball state championships. I think the scheduling could have been coordinated better to allow more fans to attend the girls games. As noted in an article, the turnout was few for the Konawaena game due to other games/sports being held at or around the same time. This splits the fan base, which was unfortunate for the home team.

Good points, mks, but I would not put the burden of scheduling on the HHSAA and its STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS. You may be implying that “boys basketball and baseball” (regular season and preseason) take precedence over girls basketball state championships. Or maybe you didn’t mean that.

There should be more games than one on the neighbor island. However, the Friday/Saturday game format is a poor iformat It leaves teams, parents, family & friends scrambling the night before to secure flights. On top of that, lodging was not an option since most hotels were booked due to other events (ie: baseball, etc.). This left teams flying back home soon after the game. Also, the Lahaina Civic Center was not a true “neutral” sight since the team played in that gym before. The team is familiar with the court. Why give all the other seeded teams a “neutral” site except one team? Seeding in the event should not be based on history as this season’s seeding clearly showed that there are flaws. If history must be a factor, it should be only a small percentage factor. The HHSAA should be aware of the all athletics going on (ie: boy’s basketball games, baseball games, etc.) in order to allow all fans the opportunity to attend such events.

If it is financially viable, keep on doing it. Oahu teams traveling to the neighbor island is a great experience for the girls. Neighbor island teams traveling to Oahu is a great experience and reward. Focus on the big picture, the positive, the experience. The talent level is really improving, the games were exciting. Count me in as a new fan.

By the way the brackets were set up, I always thought the winner of Lahainaluna/Maryknoll would play Punahou in the finals. Whoever does the team rankings and matchups, PLEASE watch some basketball first. Half the teams did not deserve the bye week.

The Lunas also had wrestling going on, boys basketball and Softball game that day.
