As an MPI alum I know it’s only the 1st league game but it is exciting after years of getting knocked off by the big boys. If ever in my lifetime Mid-Pac makes the state tournament I am definitely flying in to see it.

The Daise kid went off. Jared Lum, Al’s son, did a wonderful job on Scoringlive’s Player of the Week last week, Zion Shepard, limiting him to 2 points. The 2 points Shepard got from stealing a bad pass from the Punahou PG. Would have liked to see Coach Matsuda try Jared on Daise. Even though Daise is larger, Jared plays like his old man with a fierce spirit that allows him to play bigger than he is. And as a senior captain, the kid knows how to play.

But watching Coach Matsuda for the past 5 years, he seems to value scoring over gritty kids who are willing to take a charge, block out, set a screen, body up on defense, and get on the floor for loose balls.

We all know it’s those championship intangibles that make teams winners and that spirit rubs off on the entire team. When there is too much scoring kids often fight for the ball.

I don’t recall MPI ever beating Punahou.
