The OIA while designated in D2 also play D1 teams. Once the season starts, the ILH only plays D2 teams. Hence, ranking Farrington in the top 10 make sense because they beat D1 teams. Damien may be pretty good this year but the level of play in season is not a competitive. Have a blessed day! Just my thoughts…

If you could add enrollment numbers to each school that would be nice.

Kaiser can stay in D-II, but the stellar job that Branden Kawazoe and his staff did in recent seasons, plus what Kenneth Powell and staff are doing now, I’m 99-percent sure the Cougars are NOT interested in staying in D-II. In that sense it would not make sense.

Doing a D-II poll when teams across the state have different criteria isn’t risk. It’s inconsistent. Farrington is at No. 5 right now in the Star-Advertiser Top 10. That says more to me as a fan than splitting up votes and seeing a 3,000-student school at No. 1 or No. 2 in a D-II only poll.

Keep the conversation going.

If you wanted to increase interest and sharply broaden appeal and thus the reader pool, introducing a DII reanking board would absolutely do this by giving all those DII schools, parents, and communities a chance to be ranked for the very first time. It would surely draw more genuine interest than the ridiculousness of the current “lazy” system.

Not because they don’t have the talent, but they’d get more limelight. Schedule D1 preseason games, beat some and then get write-ups on how you pulled amazing upsets of D1 teams. Then once regular season starts, cruise to a winning season and challenge for a state title. Then, I’d do it again so people could call them back to back state champs. Heck, even get some people to give you first place votes over the best D1 team and challenge for Gatorade poy award. No joke they should just as an experiment.

It would be great if that was the reason but questions always arises especially in football. If enrollment is used as one of the criteria, where is the line drawn for designating schools to be in division I or II? Here’s the OIA schools by enrollment. 1. Campbell 2. Mililani 3. Waipahu 4. Farrington 5. Kapolei 6. Moanalua 7. Waianae 8. Leilehua 9. Pearl City 10. McKinley 11. Kahuku 12. Roosevelt 13. Kalani 14. Radford 15. Castle 16. Kaiser 17. Nanakuli 18. Aiea 19. Kalaheo 20. Kaimuki 21. Kailua 22. Waialua 23.Anuenue . If kaiser has an enrollment of 1,131 and ranked 16, why would it be ridiculous for them to be in D-II? Schools has no choice of being in div I or II because of their past record but may ask to go up. Until the leagues come up with a better solution, they are abiding with what has been voted for by the members of the league. So in the mean time as I’ve mentioned, continue to follow the rules and since there are designated division I and II, just make the best of it because you’ll be waiting for a universal criteria that will never take place. Isn’t generating and increasing the sale of your newspaper part of your job by making it interesting so people will tend to look forward in purchasing the paper? I would think so. Be innovated and take that risk. Aloha!

Ranking Div II and Div
teams together in the same poll, teams that do not compete in the same tourney, simply doesn’t happen elsewhere for a legitimate reason.

When Punahou had their full team, they throttled Damien. St. Francis also beat Damien, avenging an earlier preseason loss. and Kameron wasn’t even a 100%. Look at St. Francis now in ILH, they are barely touching .500. Damien has the luxury of looking good at preseason when D1 teams don’t even care about it as much or with incomplete rosters. But when it counts, you’ll see the results of this years St Francis. A D2 team getting smacked around in D1.

Again… the criteria for classification varies to an extreme from league to league, or from the OIA to other leagues. When that criteria becomes universal — not necessarily perfectly defined — it will make sense to have two polls. Do you really think a school with 3,000 students should be happy about being No. 1 in Division II? Especially when it wasn’t their choice?

There’s nothing to stop the OIA from expanding its D-I field from 12 teams to 14. Farrington and Kaiser in D-II is ridiculous. That would reduce OIA D-II to seven teams, which makes much more sense. Kaimuki, Castle, Anuenue, Waianae, Nanakuli, Waipahu, Waialua. Frankly, Waipahu and Waianae have the enrollment to be in D-I, I believe.

Until there is a change that protects smaller schools and stops rewarding large schools for underachieving — especially in football — one poll is a constant that makes sense.

Besides, it’s fun to have questions and debates about where Damien and Farrington (and St. Francis in the previous two seasons) should be in the rankings. Fun is good.
