The teams are ranked on my ballot numerically, so what you’re saying is that you don’t actually read the numbers. You just want to gripe about the “sumo rankings” that I have fun with.

What the sumo stuff is actually about is this: there are usually tiers or levels of teams in any sport. One team could be No. 5 and another No. 10, but they’re closer in competitive level than the teams at No. 2 and No. 3. Plus, it’s fun for me while I’m grinding out a list of 35 teams.

YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO PROVIDE YOUR LIST OF 35 TEAMS, BROTHER. And as I said to Loca1boy, until each league has the same, uniform criteria, we will continue to collect votes from coaches and media for one poll.

Question: Do you really think it makes sense for any school with 3,000 students to be in D-II, playing the likes of Hawaii Prep (200 students), Waialua or Makua Lani? We don’t. But it is what it is. We just do our polls and Maryknoll is the Chiyonofuji of boys basketball right now 😉

Each league has its own criteria for D-I and D-II. OIA goes by power rating (win-loss record) and shuffles the deck every two years. Even though the National Federation strongly discourages the practice of classification via power rating. But it works for the OIA, so they do what is best for them. As long as each league has a different set of criteria, our rankings will remain as is. If and when the leagues have a common and uniform criteria, then it makes sense to have corresponding Top 10 polls.

When there’s separate divisions playing for different titles (conference and state) there should be separate rankings and this also applies to Hawaii high school football and other sports. It’s funny how much effort is put into the rankings by comparing Japanese Sumo rankings with basketball ranking..just doesn’t make any sense. This is not Japan. Hopefully in the future, the SA sports department will do high school rankings the way it should be…by division.

I cant see SFS continue to be ranked above any other D1 ILH teams, especially one that beat them.
