8 takeaways push Na Menehune into first place

By Jeremy Nitta on September 8, 2018

Forcing a turnover is an exciting moment for a defense. Often, coaches will point to takeaways as key moments or turning points in ball games. In Moanalua’s 42-7 rout over visiting Kailua on Friday, those moments came early and often. “Our defensive backs coach told us that when the quarterback throws the ball, we’re supposed to see the ball and we’re supposed to take it,” defensive back Trequan Henderson said. “Tonight, there were opportunities to be made.” Henderson had two […]

Lack of depth doesn’t hurt Kaimuki

By Jeremy Nitta on August 11, 2018

Just as every team does before a game, the Kaimuki football team lined up next to their opponent on the sideline to sing their alma mater. As they did, one thing became glaringly obvious: the lack of numbers on the Kaimuki roster. “We weren’t really sure what it was going to be like tonight,” Kaimuki coach David Tautofi said. “Especially with us only suiting up 21 guys, we were prepared for it, but it worked out in our favor.” According […]

Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo does it all for Aiea

By Jeremy Nitta on September 24, 2016

Kame Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo literally stands out. At 6-3, he is the tallest listed player on Aiea’s football roster, towering over his teammates, who average around 5-6 to 5-8 in height. Additionally, his long last name is somewhat eye-catching to someone studying the Aiea roster. But on the field, Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo has emerged as a standout as well. The senior has become something of an ironman for Na Alii, lining up as a receiver, defensive back, placekicker, and punter. […]

Chargers stick to game plan to beat Kalani

By Jeremy Nitta on August 13, 2016

Everything seemed to be stacked against the Pearl City Chargers as the second quarter drew to a close in their OIA opener against the Kalani Falcons on Friday night. Kalani had just blocked a punt by Zion Tupuola-Fetui and a Pearl City personal foul put the ball on the Chargers 20. With Kalani already holding a 14-13 lead, it seemed that the Falcons were on the verge of seizing control of the game. Instead, the Chargers defense dug deep, stonewalling […]

Moanalua’s Yuen shakes off early jitters

By Jeremy Nitta on August 6, 2016

Senior quarterback Alakai Yuen was supposed to be the star this season for the Moanalua football team. But early on in the season opener against Damien on Friday night, Yuen struggled. Two of his first four passes were intercepted by the Monarchs, and Yuen was visibly frustrated on the sideline. “He had major jitters, and I was trying to calm him down on the sideline,” first-year Moanalua coach Savai’i Eselu said. “Alakai is a workhorse, and he does such a […]
