ON THIS DATE: Punahou’s Roy Bohler goes ‘missing’

On this date in 1931, Punahou coach and athletic director Roy Bohler got married.

That wouldn’t normally be big news, except that the bachelor didn’t tell anyone. A quick bit of journalism found out that Miss Madeleine Hallett arrived from Washington and the couple got a marriage license as soon as she got off the boat.

Bohler and his bride lasted six more years in Hawaii, before he was hired as head football and track coach at Chico State. The former Washington State All-American planted roots in Calif., coaching the school’s baseball team from 1947-63. The baseball field at Chico State was named “Roy Bohler Field” until 1997, when a new stadium was erected at the same site.
