LIVE BLOG: Aiea at #5 Farrington

The office is scorching hot this afternoon with trade winds at about 1 to 2 mph. No kidding. Fortunately, I was wise enough to invest in a large Slurpee™, one of my few allowances for 100-percent junk food this week.

Aiea is 1-1 after a loss to Kaiser and win over Kailua. There are some interesting pieces who graduated and some interesting pieces in this year’s lineup. But I don’t know if they’ve gelled as quickly as Farrington (3-0) has. It’s hard to beat any team with a third-year starter at quarterback, a team with a tradition of standout line play and a will to pound the football on the ground.

It’s about 90 degrees here, and if you’re sitting on these concrete bleachers, it’s probably closer to 115. Not joking. I once put a clock-style thermometer on the basketball court at “The Ghettos” in Kailua-Kona on a blazing hot morning. Needle went to 120 degrees within a minute.

Last night’s game at Moanalua didn’t start until 8:51 p.m. (after JV) and didn’t end until around 11:45. The other side of it, these 3 p.m. JV kickoffs on Saturdays at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium, is extreme heat. Bring your umbrella.

5:09 p.m.
JV final: Farrington 35, Aiea 0. We have a varsity game set to kick off at roughly 5:30 p.m. Hallelujah!

First quarter
Challen Faamatu breaks off a 53-yard cutback run with a great block from Freedom Alualu (the motion man). Ranan Mamiya cracks it in from 1 yard out on the next play. FAR 7, AIEA 0, 10:28.

Nice punt return by Mamiya sets up a quick 48-yard scoring drive for the Govs. Faamatu blasts through for a 1-yard TD run. FAR 14, AIEA 0, 2:19.

Mamiya adds passing to his skill set. He takes a lateral from Montana Liana, then throws a spiral to Kingston Moses-Sanchez, who fakes three defenders en route to a 71-yard touchdown. FAR 21, AIEA 0, :20.

Second quarter
Kekoa Sasaoka misses a 22-yard field-goal try, then drills a 27-yard attempt. FAR 24, AIEA 0, 4:01.

Senior defensive back Siaosi Pakileata picks off a pass and returns it 41 yards to the end zone. FAR 31, AIEA 0, 2:32.

Montana Liana to C.J. Liana on a 34-yard bomb. Faamatu scores on a 4-yard run. FAR 38, AIEA 0, :50.

Farrington’s defensive line closes out the first half nicely. Seufagafaga Luafatasaga bats down a pass attempt and Breiden Fehoko records a sack.

HALF: Governors 38, Na Alii 0.

Third quarter
Na Alii go backwards, then the punt snap sails high and out of the end zone. Farrington had 10 men on the line for a possible punt block. FAR 40, AIEA 0, 8:29.

They keep punting to him, so Mamiya returns this one 60 yards to the house. PAT fake and run fails. FAR 46, AIEA 0, 4:16.

Fourth quarter
Freddy Tumbaga with a 14-yard TD run. He’s not on the roster, hoping this is the right spelling until I get it verified. PAT pass failed. FAR 52, AIEA 0, :14.

A little heat, a little blue sky and it's time for football at the Ticky. This is a JV game between Aiea and Farrington.
