USC freshman running back Vavae Malepeai will miss 6-to-8 weeks with a shoulder injury, according to a report by Michael Castillo on ReignOfTroy.com.
Malepeai, a 2016 Mililani graduate and Hawaii’s all-time leading high school rusher, broke his scapula during practice last week.
In Castillo’s story, he mentions Malepeai as having “turned heads” at practice.
He wrote: “With a quick, yet physical pin-balling running style, he had emerged as a potential breakout star despite being the freshman in a crop of highly talented backs.”
The story goes on to say that Malepeai was getting more reps with the second team during last week’s first week of training camp and that he was possibly going to be a complement to starters Justin Davis and Ronald Jones and change-of-pace back Dominic Davis.
Malepeai is expected to miss September and return in early October and, due to the injury, is a redshirt candidate.

I’ve said it before on the warrior beat blog and I’ll say it again: Injury prone. Malepeai is a phenomenal talent but he’s made of glass. It might end up being good that he passed on UH because it freed up another scholarship that would’ve been tied up with him redshirting and rehabbing.

USC He’s competing for a top position I leave it at that bradda man must be more aware of that in the mainland no more such thing as aloha spirit unless you bring it from the polynesian islands. I’m just glad it wasnt a fully torn ligament those suckas take longer for heal and maybe not at all fully. I would treat each practice as a big game in protecting ones self and at game as survival only way to make sure you to come out of this. When he continues to see the roars of the crowds he will heal faster because he has a passion for the game. Thoughts are with you my braddah!!!
Very unfortunate that he got injured. Would’ve been totally cool for a true freshman from Hawaii to have earned a starting position. Only a few are able to do that. I’m guessing he would’ve been Hawaii’s first to do that.
