Plenty of talent has moved through Wahiawa over the years, led by running back Adrian Murrell. The NFL veteran was first-team All-State three years in a row by the Honolulu Advertiser, the first to be so honored. Waianae’s Kennedy Tulimasealii, Kahuku’s Aofaga Wily, Castle’s Blaze Soares and Gerald Welch of Saint Louis are the only other 3-time first-team all state players.

But no position has been as consistently good for the school as quarterback. Andrew Manley was among the best in the state for two years, followed by Kenan Sadanaga‘s offensive player of the year award by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser in 2011. Manley was the Honolulu Star-Bulletin’s player of the year in 2008. Before they came along, Alex Kaloi was the player of the year in 1972 and Bryant Moniz was first team for the Star-Bulletin in 2006.

That would make for one tough decision if you were to make an all-Leilehua team. One place that wouldn’t be too difficult would be defensive line, where the Mules would probably have Al Harris, Junior Tyrell and Fialele Edra. All three of them were defensive player of the year.

Here are Leilehua’s All-State first teamers over the years. Names in bold denote a player who was judged as a player of the year:

Jerry Campany, I know for a fact that they (Tui Alailima & Tony Sua) graduated in 1977. That said, there football season would be in 1976. I’ve also noticed that Oscar (Osa) Masaniai from Waianae high school was not mentioned (He was1976 first team all state RB). But his brother, Joe Masaniai was mentioned (1979).

I don’t doubt it, Toa, and really appreciate the corrections. But I am sure you can understand that I have to check my files before I go adding it. Were they All-State first team for the Star-Bulletin or the Advertiser? I will check it as soon as I get home in a few hours.

I don’t see any of the three on the Advertiser’s All-State first team in 1976, it must have been the Star-Bulletin. I don’t have that with me, I will have to go to the library to look it up.

Don’t worry, we will make this right.

Aloha Jerry Campany, mea culpa….The names that I’ve mentioned were OIA first team only (played in the OIA vs ILH all star game). I do appreciate and enjoy your thorough research. That being said, any chance of putting up the 1979 All State Players? Mahalo & job well done….

No worries, Toa, I can put the 79 pages up but only in B&W. I will do it whenever I get back to the library, probably early next week. I’ll email you the small part of the Advertiser’s 1979 that I have in the meantime.
