Nanakuli senior two-way lineman Lyle Tuiloma said Wednesday night that he gave his oral commitment to
Colorado on Tuesday.
Tuiloma is projected to work on the defensive side of the ball for coach Mike MacIntyre’s Buffaloes next season.
He is a solid 6 feet 3 and 285 pounds and he’s playing left offensive tackle and defensive tackle for the Golden Hawks.
“This was a big decision for me,” said Tuiloma, a two-year starter who added that he’ll stick with his choice and, when the time comes, sign his letter of intent, officially accepting a scholarship offer from Colorado. “I wouldn’t have made a decision if I was going to change my mind.”
He plans to study communications and sports broadcasting.
Colorado recruited Tuiloma during a Maximum Exposure summer camp at Mililani, where he won the defensive lineman MVP award.
Tuiloma said his main role with the Golden Hawks (1-0 OIA Division II) this season is on offense because that’s where the team needs him the most. He is also seeing plenty action on defense.
Nanakuli hosts Roosevelt on Friday night.
Two seasons ago, Tuiloma played for the Nanakuli JV team and was brought up to the varsity to play in the Division II state tournament, when the Golden Hawks
defeated No. 3-seeded Konawaena 25-23 before losing 28-0 in the semifinals to Lahainaluna.
“I didn’t play much at all in the states,” Tuiloma said. “A couple of series, but I remember the intensity and speed was amazing compared to the JVs.”
Four players with Hawaii ties are on the Colorado roster this season, part of a pipeline that former Buffaloes assistant Brian Cabral, who grew up in Kailua, established. The four are: senior offensive lineman Kaiwi Crabb (Punahou), senior defensive lineman Juda Parker (Saint Louis), senior linebacker K.T. Tu‘umalo (Punahou), and freshman defensive back Jaisen Sanchez (Saint Louis).
