MaxPreps Hawaii rankings: 1 through 45

Mililani is No. 3 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 and No. 149 in the MaxPreps national computer rankings for the state of Hawaii. In photo, Mililani's Ryan Chang turns it upfield after catching a pass in a Sept. 8 victory over Farrington. Jamm Aquino / Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

MaxPreps.com ranks all of the high school football teams nationally in what it calls its Freeman computer rankings.

The computer rankings are separate from the website’s Xcellent 25, a poll voted on by humans in which the top-ranked team in Hawaii, Saint Louis, is No. 25.

The Crusaders, however, are No. 15 in the Freeman computer rankings. Also, in a completely separate poll, Saint Louis is No. 14 in the USA Today Super 25 computer rankings and are not ranked in the USA Today Super 25 expert poll. No other Hawaii team is in the Top 100 in the USA Today Super 25 computer rankings.

MaxPreps’ national Freeman computer rankings of all Hawaii teams follow, with record and Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10 ranking in parentheses.

But first, here is a note on the MaxPreps site on how the computer rankings are done (which may explain why Kaiser, which forfeited its season in Hawaii, is ahead of 10 other teams in the state):

“We do not poll coaches, sportswriters, or fans. Nor does our staff make any judgments on the merits of any individual team. Prior season history, school size, and comments on message boards are not considered in the MaxPreps computer rankings.

“The system utilizes the huge number of game results stored in the MaxPreps database. Generally, the more a team wins the higher the ranking, but the system takes into account quality wins (against other highly ranked opponents) and strength of schedule.

“For example, a team’s ranking is hurt more by losing to a team that is ranked below them versus a team ranked ahead.

“Other factors that will affect the rankings are times when MaxPreps has incomplete or inaccurate information. We will correct errors when they are reported to us. If we are missing a score, report it to us on the team’s MaxPreps page. If we are missing a game on the schedule, send us a correction request.

“Playoff wins are weighed higher compared to a regular-season game.
