GAME NIGHT 9/9: Kapolei/Kailua

Kapolei will attempt to snap a three-game losing streak against No. 8 Kailua, which suffered its first loss last week against Farrington.

9:26: Kailua’s Gaege Kupahu appears to be open at the right front corner of the end zone, but Kapolei’s Peni Naulu steps in front of it and returns it 98 yards for a touchdown. Bantolina kicks the extra point. KAPOLEI 33, KAILUA 0, 5:16 to go in game.

9:21: Kailua is driving. Backup quarterback Cole Weber hits Gaege Kupahu with a 25-yard pass down the middle.

9:17: The Hurricanes punt, but they get the ball back on an interception by Burkel.

9:05: Two Kalaola passes to Keoki Kaluhiwa cover 50 yards. But Kapolei gets hit with two big penalties and is back in its own territory.

FOURTH QUARTER

9:01: Kaniala Kalaola is in at QB for the Hurricanes.

8:59: A Faumui tackle for loss for Kapolei leads to a Kailua punt.

8:56: The Hurricanes go nowhere and punt.

8:50: Kailua bogs down and punts.

8:48: Yet another bad snap goes over Mejia’s head. He chases it down and gets off a pass out of bounds to avoid a loss for the second time on the night.

8:45: A 15-yard Hurricanes penalty and a 12-yard Mejia run brings the ball to the Kapolei 37.

8:39: Bantolina kicks a 28-yard field goal. KAPOLEI 26, KAILUA 0, 8:39 left in third quarter.

8:37: Burkel recovers a fumble for the Hurricanes, who are marching toward another score.

8:34: Keanu Barboza is wide open on the second play of the second half for Kapolei and he scores on a 48-yard pass from Lonenoa Faoa. Bantolina kicks the extra point. KAPOLEI 23, KAILUA 0, 11:01 left in third quarter.

THIRD QUARTER

8:11: Halftime.

8:07: A Mejia pass into triple coverage is intercepted by the Hurricanes’ Teriq Lacaden at about the 5. He returns it 33 yards, but the ball is brought back 15 of those yards due to a penalty. 14 seconds left in the half.


8:04: A string of short completions and a 15-yard Kapolei personal-foul penalty moves the ball to the Kapolei 20. 38 seconds left in the half.

8:02: Another snap goes over the head of Mejia, but he is able to run down the ball, scramble and get a pass off to avoid losing yardage.

7:59: The Hurricanes pick up just six yards on four downs and turn over the ball to Kailua on downs for the second time in a row.

7:56: On first down for Kailua, Mejia throws a deep ball that is picked off by Kapolei’s Christian Broome.

7:55: A pass interference penalty brings the ball to the Kailua 5, but the Hurricanes can’t score and the Surfriders take over on downs.

7:52: Kapolei gets the ball back when Kevin Burkel recovers an onside kick. On first down, Faoa connects with Tamatoa Mokiao-Atimalala for a 31-yard gain. The Hurricanes are knocking on the door.

7:48: Faoa hits Isaiah Ahana with a pass at about the Kailua 35. Ahana breaks a few tackles and heads up the right sideline into the end zone. Bantolina adds the extra point. KAPOLEI 16, KAILUA 0, 4:21 left in first half.

7:39: Kailua loses 22 yards due to a snap over the head of Mejia. On the next play, Treven Maae sacks Mejia for a 4-yard loss. Yet another snap goes over the head of Teramoto, the punter, and in and out of the end zone for a safety. KAPOLEI 9, KAILUA 0, 5:42 left in first half.

7:36: A bad snap leads to a 9-yard loss. Kapolei can’t move and punts the ball away. Kailua ball at its own 22.

7:29: Kailua’s drive stalls. The Surfriders punt. Kapolei ball at its own 12.

SECOND QUARTER

7:25: Samson Rasay rushes for 17 yards to the Kapolei 32. Mejia’s pass deep down the right sideline is just out of the reach of Kamryn Kahoonei. The first quarter ends.

7:22: Mejia is being hounded by Kapolei’s defensive line.

7:17: Matt Gututala intercepts a Mejia pass at the Kailua 13. On first down for the Hurricanes, Faoa throws his first TD pass in a Kapolei uniform — for 13 yards to Titus Mokiao-Atimalala. Braedon Bantolina kicks the extra point. KAPOLEI 7, KAILUA 0, 2:33 left in first quarter.

7:14: Dreyden-Steele Kawewehi’s line-drive punt goes out of bounds and pins the Surfriders at their 5.

7:10: A personal-foul penalty on Kailua moves the ball to the Surfriders’ 25.

7:06: Faoa’s 37-yard pass to Keanu Barboza gets the ball to the Kailua 40.

7:04: An Aaron Faumui sack leads to a Kailua punt.

6:59: Kapolei goes three and out and punts. Kailua ball at its own 37.

6:56: It appears that Lonenoa Faoa is in at QB for the Hurricanes. A touchdown pass to Tamatoa Mokiao-Atimalala is called back due to a penalty.

6:54: Kailua goes three and out and punts.

6:51: Aaron Mejia in at quarterback for the Surfriders.


FIRST QUARTER
