GAME NIGHT 9/30: Damien/Pac-Five

The regular season begins to wind down Friday night with the OIA Division I playoffs set to begin next week.

Damien (4-2, 2-1) can clinch at least a share of the ILH Division II regular season with a win over the Wolf Pack (2-2, 0-2). Pac-Five could create a three-way tie for first place with wins this week over the Monarchs and next week over St. Francis.

HISTORY: Damien leads the all-time series 43-38-1 … Damien can win a record eight consecutive games in the series against Pac-Five with a victory … Pac-Five had an eight-game winning streak against Damien snapped on Oct. 19, 2013, and hasn’t won since … Pac-Five once won 13 straight against Damien from 1981 to ’87 … Pac-Five’s Keoni Tom-Millare holds the Wolfpack’s top two single-game rushing marks, finishing with a record 238 yards in 2011 and 227 yards in 2012 against Damien both times.

8:30: Pac-Five pulls to within one on Johnson’s 15-yard TD pass to Kaloa, but Damien wins by one point when Shawn Borges blocks the extra point.

8:27: Damien gets the ball first in the third overtime and Faufata-Pedrina hits White with a screen pass and White covers the rest of the ground for a 20-yard touchdown. Cameron kicks the extra point.

8:25: Cameron kicks a 41-yard field goal.
>> PAC-FIVE 43, DAMIEN 43. End of second overtime.

8:23: Faufata-Pedrina is sacked for an 8-yard loss by Pac-Five’s Zion Shepherd.

8:21: Carvalho breaks up a Faufata-Pedrina pass in the end zone intended for Arecchi.

8:20: Fukuroda hits a 43-yard field goal.
>> PAC-FIVE 43, DAMIEN 40. Midway through second overtime.

8:17: Wolfpack have first possession of the second overtime. On fourth down, Johnson is sacked for an 8-yard loss by Borges.

8:15: FIRST OVERTIME ENDS.

8:15: On first down for Pac-Five, Johnson’s pass goes off the fingertips of Kaloa and into the hands of Cameron for an interception.

8:14: Cameron’s 47-yard field goal attempt is long enough, but it goes wide left.

8:12: Pac-Five’s Cody Masterson sacks Faufata-Pedrina for a 10-yard loss.

8:11: Damien gets the ball first in overtime. No gain on a run on first down. Incomplete pass on second down.

8:09: END OF REGULATION.

8:07: Faufata-Pedrina gains 2 yards by a pile of Wolfpack players. Damien hurries to the line Faufata-Pedrina spikes it. That was fourth down by HPW’s count. But the field-goal unit comes in and Cameron kicks a 23-yard field goal as time runs out.

8:05: Field officials say second down, but HPW’s scorebook and Scoring Live’s scorebook says third down.

8:03: Arecchi is tackled for a 4-yard loss to the 9 by Kealii Carvalho. Damien timeout. 20 seconds left.

8:02: White gains 3 yards to the 5.

8:01: Faufata-Pedrina gains 3 yards and a first down and a pass interference penalty brings the ball to the 8. 31 seconds left.

7:57: Two incompletions in a row is followed by a Faufata-Pedrina 22-yard pass to Apiki. Another pass to Borges gains 9 yards. Damien is in the red zone. 54 seconds left.

7:55: Borges sacks Johnson for a 10-yard loss and Pac-Five is punting. Damien takes over at the Wolfpack 28. 2:12 left in the game.

7:51: Akila Arecchi is the recipient of a 15-yard TD pass from Faufata-Pedrina. Cameron’s kick is good.
>> PAC-FIVE 40, DAMIEN 37. 4:28 to go in the game.

7:48: On a fourth and 1, Faufata-Pedrina escapes a heavy rush and scrambles for 28 yards to the Pac-Five 15.

7:45: Cameron intercepts a Johnson pass to give Damien some life.

7:35: Johnson throws his sixth TD pass of the game and the third to Kaloa from 11 yards out. Fukuroda’s extra-point kick is short.
>> PAC-FIVE 40, DAMIEN 30. 9:10 left in game.

7:33: A 20-yard Johnson to Kaloa connection advances the ball to the Damien 11.

7:32: Ihu’s 20-yard return gives the Wolfpack excellent field position at the Damien 31.

7:29: Damien finds trouble, when Faufata-Pedrina is sacked for a 12-yard loss by Tong. A personal foul penalty on the Monarchs puts the ball on the Damien 14. The Monarchs eventually punt.

7:25: END THIRD QUARTER.

7:23: A pass interference penalty on Damien advances the ball to the Monarchs’ 13. On the next play, Johnson connects with Kaloa for a 13-yard TD pass. It’s Johnson’s fifth touchdown pass of the game and Kaloa’s second score. Fukuroda’s extra-point kick is good.

7:21: Pac-Five is on the move with a combination of runs and passes. Ihu gains 9 and 3 yards for a first down at the Damien 26.


7:14: One of Damien’s top defensive players, Shawn Borges, gets into the offensive act, catching an 18-yard TD pass. At first, Cameron kicks the extra point, but a roughing the kicker penalty is called and the Monarchs opt to go for 2. Another penalty on Pac-Five brings the ball to the 1, where Faufata-Pedrina gets the call and crashes in for the 2 points.

7:10: White hauls in a pass from Faufata-Pedrina for a 31-yard gain to the Pac-Five 8. A holding call on the next play puts the ball on the 18.

7:07: Faufata-Pedrina is nearly sacked but escapes and gains 16 yards to the Wolfpack 39.

7:02: Two plays later, Johnson connects with Jett Uechi in the right front corner of the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown. The kicker, Fukuroda takes a lateral from the holder, rolls to his left and completes a 2-point conversion pass to Kekahi Tam.

6:59: On a third and 5 play, Hallstein gets open past the Damien coverage and catches a 50-yard pass from Johnson to the Monarchs 15.

6:57: Damien can’t move and loses the ball on downs.

6:52: Pac-Five’s Chansen Oshiro recovers a Damien fumble on the ensuing kickoff, but the Wolfpack give the ball and field position to the Monarchs on Shawn Borges’ fumble recovery and 37-yard return to the Pac-Five 28.

6:48: The Wolfpack pick two first downs on three straight runs before Johnson finds Hallstein wide open down the left sideline for a 64-yard touchdown. The Monarchs’ safety bit on the play, leaving Hallstein open over the top. An extra-point pass attempt fails.

6:43: The second half is underway. Damien picks up a first down, but the drive stalls and the Monarchs punt. Pac-Five ball at its own 8.

6:23: HALFTIME.

6:22: Pac-Five gets past midfield before halftime, but during a 9-yard gain, AJ Ulufale fumbles and Damien’s Soren Wong recovers as time runs out in the second quarter.

6:13: Livingston-Lopez streaks down the left sideline to make a 41-yard catch on a pass from Faufata-Pedrina. On the next play, Faufata-Pedrina scores on a 6-yard run. Cameron boots the extra point.
>> DAMIEN 22, PAC-FIVE 15. 42 seconds to go before halftime.

6:10: Damien is on the move and across midfield. Monarchs face third and 7 from the Pac-Five 47. Damien calls timeout. 1:13 to go before halftime.

6:07: Johnson just misses TD throws to Hallstein (just out of bounds) and to Ihu (in and out of his hands) and Damien eventually takes over on downs.

6:05: Two Johnson passes to Kaloa cover 29 yards and the Wolfpack are at the Damien 18.

5:58: The Pac-Five defense holds, thanks Keawe Tong’s third-down sack of Faufata-Pedrina. Damien punts and the Wolfpack take over on their own 32.

5:56: Johnson passes to Travis Kaloa on a slant pattern for a 6-yard touchdown. Fukuroda’s kick is good.

5:53: The Wolfpack call their third (final) timeout of the half. It’s third and goal from the 6. 8:01 left in the half.

5:51: On a designed run, Johnson gains 5 yards up the middle to the 6 for a first down.

5:49: Pac-Five calls a timeout with a fourth down and 4 situation at the Damien 11.

5:47: A 29-yard Johnson to Ihu pass play brings the ball to the Damien 30 and a pass interference call puts the Wolfpack on the Monarchs’ 17.

5:42: After a short Damien punt, Pac-Five takes over on its own 33.

5:41: FIRST QUARTER ENDS.

5:40: Damien is across midfield on Faufata-Pedrina’s 8-yard pass to James-Kapilioha Livingston-Lopez.

5:35: Holding and facemask penalties on Damien help Pac-Five on its fourth possession. Johnson finds Pona Aga for an 11-yard gain before hitting Matthew Hallstein with a 34-yard touchdown pass. Tyler Fukuroda’s kick is wide left.

5:30: A Faufata-Pedrina 32-yard slant pass to Shaun Apiki covers 32 yards to the 5. Two plays later, Faufata-Pedrina scores from 1-yard out. Cameron misses the extra point.

5:28: The Wolfpack’s third possession ends in disaster as Damien’s Shawn Borges picks off quarterback Ryan Johnson pass. Monarchs ball at the Pac-Five 37.

5:25: After a 3-yard loss, Damien scores on Justice White’s 4-yard run. Cameron’s extra-point try is wide right.
>> DAMIEN 9, PAC-FIVE 0. 6:56 left in first quarter.

5:23: Monarchs quarterback Marcus Faufata-Pedrina gallops 82 yards to the Pac-Five 1, where he is pushed out by the Wolfpack’s Christian Paet.

5:20: Wolfpack punt on their second possession, wiping out the gain of field position made by Grey Ihu with a 32-yard punt return.


5:18: On fourth down, Cameron kicks a 29-yard field goal.
>> DAMIEN 3, PAC-FIVE 0. 8:35 left in first quarter.

5:15: Pac-Five fumbles on its first possession and Damien’s Kaimana Cameron recovers. Monarchs ball on the Wolfpack 25.
