GAME NIGHT 9/29: Kapolei/Nanakuli

The valley hosts the first loser-goes-home game of the 2017 season as Kapolei and Nanakuli battle to see which team makes the OIA playoffs.

Kaipo Burnett in at QB for Nanakuli. He completes a 10-yard pass to Sinai Robello and scrambles for another. A deep throw is intercepted by Saige Mactagone-Kuhaulua and the clock runs out. Kapolei quaifies for the OIA playoffs.

Faoa back in for Kapolei. Kansana picks up 31 yards on three carries. Faoa with a short completion then a 14-yard strike to Keoki Kaluhiwa. TOUCHDOWN KAPOLEI. PAT wide. Running clock in effect.

 

On the next play, Joey Vea-Quitog takes the handoff but can’t get out of the end zone. SAFETY KAPOLEI. 10:15 Q4.

Kaniala Kalaola in at QB for Kapolei. Hurricanes punts, but the ball comes loose on the return and Kapolei recovers at the Nanakuli 17. Looked close to kick catch interference but no flag. A sack pushes Kapolei into a third-and-20, but Kalaola connects with Barboza on a corner route for 16 yards to the Nanakuli 1. Quarter ends with a sack Charleston Mahoe back to the 15. After a 9 yard completion and a short run, Tamatoa Mokiao-Atimalala is stopped short of the goalline on fourth and goal. Nanakuli ball.

Encroachment gives Nanakuli first and 5. Toilolo and Aaron Faumui drop Enos on back-to-back sacks. Nanakuli punts from its 20.

Jarad Fonoti pounds forward for 39 yards on four carries. Kansana picks up 15 more. Faoa throws the fade to Barboza for an 11-yard score. TOUCHDOWN KAPOLEI. PAT good. 7:07

Nanakuli will receive to start the second half. Golden Hawks go three-and-out and punt. Kapolei ball at its 45.


Faoa with a strike to Keanu Barboza down the right side for 25. Then short tosses for gains of 5 and 4, timeouts for both teams before third-and-1 at the Nanakuli 16. :18.3 left. False start moves the ball back to the 21. Faoa hits Titus Mokiao-Atimalala on a post for 18 to the 3. Hurricanes spike. Fade into the back corner is nearly intercepted, but out of bounds. A 20-yard field goal attempt is wide to end the half.

Nanakuli’s Clyde Enos is sacked on first down. On third down a low snap results in a loss of 17 back to the Nanakuli 3. Kapolei timeout, 1:07. Nanakui punts. Kapolei ball at midfield. :56.9 left.

Faoa’s first downfield shot of the game falls incomplete to end his streak at 15 consecutive completions. The Hurricanes convert on a fourth-and-7 when Faoa hits Tamatoa Mokiao-Atimalala over the middle. He gets loose down the left side and he’s in from 40 yards out. TOUCHDOWN KAPOLEI. PAT good. 1:51 Q2.

Dylan Toilolo makes a tackle for a 4-yard loss and Kapolei forces Nanakuli into another three-and-out. 3:10 left. Kapolei ball at the Nanakuli 43.

Kapolei grinding out first downs with the short passing game. Faoa is 15-for-16 for 103 yards. Nanakuli takes timeout with Kapolei at the Golden Hawks’ 12. Josh Kansana enters the backfield and picks up 3 on the right side. He takes a toss to the left and dives for the pylon. TOUCHDOWN KAPOLEI. PAT good. 4:39

Nanakuli’s second possession results in two completions for a loss of 8 and the Golden Hawks will punt.

Kapolei opens the second quarter with Lonenoa Faoa hitting Titus Mokiao-Atimalala on a slant, and he takes it into the end zone. TOUCHDOWN KAPOLEI. PAT good. 11:50.

Wow. That had to be the fastest quarter of the season. Kapolei has second-and-10 at the Nanakuli 18 to start the second. Still scoreless.

Kapolei drives to the Nanakuli 4 in nine plays, but the Golden Hawks stuff a fourth-down screen pass for a loss of 2. Nanakuli picks up a first down but a sack for a loss of 8 stalls the drive and the Golden Hawks punt.

Kapolei will receive the opening kickoff.


No JV game for this one and the Golden Hawks and Hurricanes are ready to go. As the Nanakuli PA announcer put it, “The winner goes on. The loser? Pack ‘um up and try again next year.”
