GAME NIGHT 9/16: ‘Iolani/Pac-Five

Two teams looking for their first win in league play collide in the first game of an ILH doubleheader at Aloha Stadium as ‘Iolani and quarterback Tai-John Mizutani take on Pac-Five, which has lost its last 13 games to the Raiders.

‘Iolani 55, Pac-Five 20, FINAL
 Along with Mizutani becoming the 15th Oahu quarterback to pass for at least 6,000 yards, Carter Kamana set the school record with 222 receiving yards on 10 receptions, passing the previous mark of 220 set by Keoni-Kordell Makekau, also against Pac-Five, in 2013.

Clock continues to roll and ‘Iolani keeps the ball on the ground. ‘Iolani runs a shovel pass, and there’s a brief scuffle. Two personal fouls called on Pac-Five with :10 left. The clock restarts and the game ends. ‘Iolani picks up its first ILH win of the season.

Pac-Five driving again, Kaikea Gonsales takes a handoff and breaks free down the right side, dives for the goal line and is in from 33 yards out. TOUCHDOWN PAC-FIVE. Gonsales then runs in Pac-Five’s first PAT of the day. 2:24 Q4.

On third-and-goal from the 8, Chong lofts a screen pass to Cole Ichikawa who gets into the end zone. TOUCHDOWN ‘IOLANI. PAT good. 6:11 left.

Brock Hedani drops Ulufale for a sack on third down and the Wolfpack punts. The kick is blocked by Tom Topinka and goes out of bounds at the ‘Pac-Five 10. 7:35 left. Jonah Chong in at QB for ‘Iolani.

Pick-Six. ‘Iolani’s Lanakila Pei returns an interception 36 yards. ‘TOUCHDOWN ‘IOLANI. PAT good. 10:27.

Mizutani connects with Miyazawa for 12 yards, then picks up 12 more on a scramble to the Raiders’ 47. He hits Kamana over the middle and the Wolfpack won’t catch him for a 53-yard TOUCHDOWN ‘IOLANI. PAT failed. With that drive, Mizutani passes the 6,000-yard mark for his career with 426 yards today.

Pac-Five drives into ‘Iolani territory but Angelo drops Ulufale for a loss of 10 on third down. On fourth-and-15, Ulufale connects with Uechi for 13 yards and ‘Iolani takes over. The quarter ends with an incomplete pass.

Mizutani goes 6-for-6 for 50 yards and finds Rayden Kaneshiro in the back of the end zone for a 14-yard score. TOUCHDOWN ‘IOLANI. PAT good. 3:26 Q3. Mizutani now 29-for-36 for 358 yards and two touchdowns, with a rushing score as well.

Pac-Five drives into ‘Iolani territory on Ulufale’s 17-yard completion to Uechi. But The Wolf Pack stalls there and a fourth-down pass goes incomplete.

‘Iolani starts the third quarter at midfield. Mizutani to Drake Shigemura for 16 and to Kamana for another 15. He scrambles for 6 yards on third-and-4 to the Pac-Five 3. Wolfpack stuffs two runs, then stops Nishigaya at the goal line on a third-down completion. On fourth-and-goal, Mizutani fakes the handoff, keeps it, and is dropped at the 4. Pac-Five holds and takes over. Personal foul on ‘Iolani moves the ball out to the 19.


‘Iolani starts at its 41 with 1:20 left. Mizutani to Kamana for 15, than another 6. Timeout ‘Iolani. Mizutani scrambles for 6 yards then connects with Genovia over the middle. He uses an inadvertent screen by the umpire to get to the 20 for 14 yards. Mizutani looks downfield, but sees open space and takes off, dives for the pylon and he’s in. TOUCHDOWN ‘IOLANI. PAT good. 0:40 Q2.

Ulufale starts the drive with a 15-yard completion to Nakamura to the 50. On third and 3, he keeps it and picks up 12 to the ‘Iolani 29. Pac-Five takes its second timeout at 1:37. Ulufale in trouble but lets it fly. The hangs up and Bek comes down with it at the 5 and takes it in. TOUCHDOWN PAC-FIVE. Ulufale run failed on the PAT. 1:23 Q2.

Raiders start at their 42. Mizutani scrambles for 8 then hits Genovia over the middle for 10. Mizutani deep down the left side to Kamana complete for 48 yards. TOUCHDOWN ‘IOLANI. PAT good. 3:44 Q2.

Breyndon Nakamura fields the kickoff at his 1 and finds room up the sideline to midfield for a 49-yard return. Ulufale comes out throwing and Nakamura breaks free for a 21-yard catch and run on third-and-1. On second down, Ulufale finds Nathan Bek on a fade down the ieft side for 19 yards. TOUCHDOWN PAC-FIVE. Pass to Bek incomplete on the PAT. 4:40 Q2.

Mizutani connects with Genovia for a 34-yard completion to the Pac-Five 20. After 5-yard penalties on both teams, Mizutani escapes pressure and scrambles to the 6. Nishigaya takes the handoff and scoots in for the second score of the game. TOUCHDOWN ‘IOLANI. PAT good. 7:06 Q2.

Mizutani hits Jonah Miyazawa for 14 yards. The next pass is jarred loose as the ball arrives. The officials rule he had possession and fumbled and Bradley is there again to recover for Pac-Five. The Wolfpack can’t get anything going and punt again.

Pac-Five goes three-and-out after Angelo makes a fine open-field tackle of Ulufale on third down. The Wolfpack punt is muffed and Bradley recovers for Pac-Five. But a formation penalty on Pac-Five wipes out the play. This time the Raiders field the punt safely at midfield. 9:32 Q2.

Mizutani completing darts to pick up a first down. A penalty forces an untimed down to end the first quarter and Pac-Five’s Laitin Bradley steps in front of the throw but can’t hang on to what might have been a pick six. The second quarter begins with Carter Kamana stretching out to snag a deep throw for a 49-yard completion to the Pac-Five 16. After a loss of 3 on first down and two incompletions a 37-yard field goal attempt hits the post.

Kaikea Gonsales picks up 11 yards on two tough runs behind the left side of the line to get Pac-Five out to the 15. Wolfpack timeout on second-and-10. Ulufale picks up 8 yards on back–to-back keepers for another first down to the 30. ‘Iolani holds there and forces a punt on fourth-and-4. Raiders ball at their 30. 1:22 Q1.

‘Iolani gets to midfield in eight plays, including a 16-yard completion to Justin Genovia. But the drive stalls there and the Raiders punt. The kick is downed at the Pac-Five 4. 6:04 Q1.

Pac-Five starts at its 45. On third and 9, Ulufale goes deep down the left side again. This time, ‘Iolani CB Micah Shikada makes a diving catch for an interception. Raiders ball at their 20.

Tai-John Mizutani completes his first three passes to get ‘Iolani to the 48. On third-and-2, Kaua Nishigaya takes the ball up the middle cuts to his left and gets loose down the sideline. Breaks a tackle at the 10 and he’s in. TOUCHDOWN ‘IOLANI. PAT good. 9:15 Q1.


‘Iolani DL Jake Angelo opens the game with a tackle for loss. On third-and-11, Pac-FIve QB AJ Ulufale completes a deep ball to Jett Uechi down the left side for 33 yards to the ‘Iolani 28. Pac-Five gains 3 yards on first down, but the next three passes fall incomplete. ‘Iolani takes over. 10:16 Q1.

Another brilliant afternoon at Aloha Stadium for an ILH doubleheader. Pac-Five wins the toss and elects to receive the opening kickoff.
