GAME NIGHT 8/5: Kalaheo/Castle

It’s opening night in the 808 with seven high school football games scheduled for Oahu.

An Eastside rivalry renewed takes place to open the season as the Castle Knights host the Kalaheo Mustangs for the first meeting between the two schools in nine years. ‘

10:14 p.m.: Nelson Maeda complete the shutout, Castle wins its opener 38-0.


10:08 p.m.: Jaylen Uyemura Lee 43 yard TD pass to Dylan Kelling, PAT good. 38-0, 8:17

9:22 p.m.: Costa 27 yard FG good. 31-0 and we finally get to halftime of this fracas.

8:57 p.m.: Henry Nakamura McCoy 2 yd TD run, PAT good. 28-0, 3:20.
Camacho is ok, he was walked off the field.

8:55 p.m.: Kalaheo RB Anthony Camacho fumbles at the Castle 46, Castle LB Paki Tyquiengco returns it to the Kalaheo 8, Camacho is down with an apparent injury.

8:48 p.m.: Chris Sakuma 4 yd rush td, 2 pt conversion good, Jaylen Uyemura Lee to Samuka. 21-0, 5:38 left in 2Q. Knights looking good.

8:33 p.m.: Israel Pakele 6 yd td run for Castle, PAT failed. 13-0, 10:25 2Q

8:27 p.m.: 1st quarter over, Castle up 7-0 with the ball at the Kalaheo 42, 2nd and 5.

8:22 p.m.: Makana Smith throws a pick in the end zone , returned to the Kalaheo 6 by Mustangs LB/RB Josiah Akau. Kalaheo RB Anthony Camacho fumbles on the next play, Knights recover at the 1. Castle RB Israel Pakele pounds it in, Cheyden Costa PAT is good. Castle up 7-0, 1:55 left Q1

8:10 p.m.: Still scoreless, 5:25 Q1. Castle QB Makana Smith td run called back by a holding call.

8:05 p.m.: Castle three and out on first possession.


8:00 p.m.: Kalaheo gets a first down and then gains no yards. Punts to Castle on their own 30 9:54 left, Q1

7:31 p.m.: Kickoff scheduled for 7:47 p.m.

7:23 p.m.: Castle takes the JV game 19-14 after trailing 14-0 in the third quarter.

LAST MEETING: Kalaheo’s Max Karsten rushed for two touchdowns and Cody VonAppen, son of former UH head football coach Fred VonAppen, tossed an 8-yard touchdown pass to Kaeo Malama-Custer in the Mustangs’ 29-13 win on Sept. 14, 2007.

>> Castle holds a 14-11 edge in 25 meetings against Kalaheo with wins in four of the last five games, including one by forfeit in August of 1999.

>> Castle WR Jeremy McGoldrick has gone over 100 yards receiving in four of his eight games played at the varsity level. The Knights have only had one 100-yard receiver in 25 games against the Mustangs (Peter Pappalardo, 129 yards, 1980).

>> Castle is the first Division I team Kalaheo has played since dropping to Division II in 2008.

>> The Mustangs haven’t won more than two games in a season since 2012.


>> Kalaheo hasn’t won a season opener since shutting out Waialua 40-0 in 2011.

>> Castle has lost two of its last three games against Division II opponents.
