Another matchup of top-10 teams highlights the five-game slate Saturday on Oahu.

The last two winless teams in the OIA Red battle in the valley as Nanakuli hosts Leilehua. The Mules have won the last four meetings but this is the first game between the two schools since 2009. Nanakuli’s 14-7 win over Leilehua in 2003 is its only victory against the Mules dating back to 1983.

9:22: Game is over, but not before Mules take three knees and Nanakuli calls three timeouts and Leilehua punts. Leilehua 48, Nanakuli 13, final score.

9:18: The teams trade punts, and now Nanakuli has the ball with 3:36 left, running clock at its own 35.

9:12: Andres throws his second touchdown pass, a 15-yarder to Boatwright. Makue kick is good. Leilehua 48, Nanakuli 13. 10:43 left in game.

9:01: Third quarter ends. Nanakuli can’t move and punts. Leilehua driving with Andres in at QB.

8:51: Mules strike back. This time, quarterback Kona Andres completes three straight passes, including a 24-yarder to Serafi Ulai. Makue kick is good. Leilehua 41, Nanakuli 13. 2:12 remaining in third quarter.

8:45: Chyson Morgan gains 38 yards on a pass from Banks and then goes 10 yards for a Nanakuli touchdown. Leilehua 34, Nanakuli 13. 3:16 left in the third quarter. Souza Meyers’ extra-point kick was blocked by Leilehua’s Destry Pulawa-Lopez.

9:03: Andres’ quick toss goes to Boatright over everyone’s head and right on target in the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown. Makue kick is good. Leilehua 48, Nanakuli 13. 10:43 left in game.

8:43: That was Piceno’s fourth TD pass of the game.

8:41: On second down, Piceno throws a 9-yard touchdown pass to Phifer on a slant. Makue kick is good. Leilehua 34, Nanakuli 7. 3:39 left to go in third quarter.

8:40: Banks fumbles and Leilehua’s Greg Dyer recovers.

8:34: Piceno goes deep and hits Truvarious Boatwright for a 59-yard touchdown. Two-point pass fails. Leilehua 27, Nanakuli 7. 4:09 left in third quarter.

8:32: Leilehua’s Beitzel was down receiving medical attention, but now he is up and walking to sideline.

8:28: Nanakuli’s Bakns punts from own end zone. It’s the Golden Hawks’ second punt of game.

8:26: Nanakuli’s Sean Souza intercepts a long Piceno pass. Golden Hawks ball at their own 6.

8:25: Leilehua short passing game has ball at the Golden Hawks 35.

8:23: Golden Hawks are punting for the first time all game. 7:46 to go in third quarter.

8:22: Nanakuli faces third down and 10 from own 20.

8:18: Piceno scrambles, escapes a sack and throws the ball while running to his left to Beitzel in the end zone for a touchdown. Leilehua 21, Nanakuli 7. 9:17 left in third quarter.

8:17: Ball is at the Nanakuli 10 after Piceno passes to Beitzel and Antolin.

8:13: Second-half underway. Mules driving. They cross midfield on a 20-yard Piceno pass to JayJay Antolin. Another pass to Phifer helps move the ball to the Golden Hawks 29.

8:05: Only one punt by both teams in the first half, by Leilehua after its last drive.

8:04: Turnovers at halftime: Leilehua lost a fumble and threw an interception. Nanakuli lost a fumble.


8:03: Total scrimmage yards at halftime: Nanakuli 150, Leilehua 147.

7:49: Two long passes just miss. Two defensive plays made by defensive back Willis Yin. Leilehua punts and Nanakuli takes a knee to end the half.

7:47: Souza-Meyers gets the all on an end-around on a fourth-down play and loses a yard. Leilehua has ball at own 39.

7:42: Jayrius Alapai of Nanakuli intercepts a Piceno pass and Golden Hawks take over at Leilehua 45. 2:48 left in half.

7:36: Holding pushes ball back to 37. But two plays later, Banks fakes a handoff and just before a defender gets to him from the left side, he unleashes a 30-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Morgan. Souza-Meyers kicks the extra point. Leilehua 14, Nanakuli 7. 3:32 left in the first half.

7:34: A personal foul penalty on the Mules gives Nanakuli the ball at the Leilehua 27.

7:31: Big gains by Morgan and Mahoe push the Golden Hawks to the Leilehua 40.

7:24: Another Piceno pass to Beizel, this time for 19 yards, and a 10-yard Chad Dilay run sets up Piceno’s 23-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Warren Lagaaia in the middle of the end zone. Makue kicks the extra point. Leilehua 14, Nanakuli 0. 7:33 left in the half.

7:20: Leilehua drives into Golden Hawks territory on a Piceno 13-yard pass to Kendrick Beitzel.

7:17: Isaac Pascua is wide open over the middle and drops pass that would have been a first down from Banks.

7:16: Banks is dropped for a 3-yard loss by Leilehua’s Deshayne Stevens. Golden Hawks have a fourth down and 4 at the Leilehua 36.

7:14: Anthony Booker gains 9 yards and then Banks hits Nick Souza-Meyers with a 9-yard pass and Nanakuli is in Mules territory at the 33.

7:09: Keanu Hirota scores from 1-yard out. Akoni Tom Makue kicks the extra point for a 7-0 Leilehua lead. 1:39 left in the first quarter.

7:07: Piceno finds a big hole for a 16-yard gain and then gains 3 yards to the 1.

7:03: Mules quarterback Kaleo Piceno finds Kawai Phifer down the middle for a 43-yard gain. Ball is at the Nanakuli 27.

7:01: Banks is stopped short by a yard on a fourth-down rushing attempt. Leilehua takes over at its own 29.

6:59: Nanakuli quarterback Nainoa Banks is a master of the option. He pitches to Morgan for a 5-yard gain. Then, on the next play Banks escapes the rush and barely overthrows a wide-open Joey Vea-Quitog deep down the left sideline.

6:58: Charleston Mahoe picks up 19 yards on two rushes for Nanakuli. Ball is on the Leilehua 37. 7:10 left in the first quarter.

6:57: Leilehua returns the favor and fumbles. Knocked out by Jayrius Alapai and recovered by Daniel Ramos.

6:52: On first down from the Leilehua 19, the Mules’ Damion Scandrick bats a pitch away and the ball falls loose. It’s picked up by Greg Dyer.

6:49: Chyson Morgan takes an option pitch on second down for a huge gain!! It’s for 54 yards around left end.


6:49: Nanakuli starts at its own 27.

6:34: We’re about 10 minutes from kickoff. Beautiful day in Nanakuli Valley. Leilehua won the JV game, 28-26.
