GAME NIGHT 8/27: Kalani/Waialua

Another matchup of top-10 teams highlights the five-game slate Saturday on Oahu.

In OIA-DII action, Kalani travels to Waialua to take on the Bulldogs. The Falcons picked up the first win of Scott Melemai‘s tenure in an exciting 26-22 win over Kaimuki last week. Waialua also played a thriller against Kaimuki, losing 22-20 in overtime in its season opener.

Kalani has won four of the last five meetings but it was Waialua which pulled out a 21-16 victory last season.

7:40—Waialua 16, Kalani 14 FINAL

7:36—Kalani’s onside kick bounces out of bounds. Waialua ball with 1:02 left.

7:34—Kalani forces a punt and scores in two plays. Tina-Sobarano completes a 37-yd pass then runs it in for an 11 yd TD. PAT good. Kalani down 16-14 with 1:02 left.

7:26—Kalani drives into Waialua territory but two holding penalties and a sack halts the march. Waialua takes over on downs with 3:29 left Q4.

7:11—Lancen Kuni returns the free kick to the Kalani 33 and Risein Campbell starts the drive with an 18-yard run to the 15. Kalani stuffs the next three running plays. Toia completes a short pass to Nahooikaika for the first down on fourth-and-6. Toia fakes the handoff and throws to Nahooikaika for the TD. PAT good. Waialua up 16-7, 7:06 Q4.

7:05—Kalani punt snap sails high and out of the end zone for a safety. Waialua takes the lead 9-7, 10:19 Q4.


6:58—Kalani 7, Waialua 7 end 3rd qtr.

6:50—Kalani RB Jaemi Harris spins out of a tackle at the line of scrimmage and outruns the Waialua defense for an 81-yard touchdown sprint. PAT good. Falcons tie it up 7-7, 2:41 Q3.

6:15—Waialua 7, Kalani 0 halftime. Toia 8-14-1-105, 50 rushing yards. Kalani QB Seth Tina-Sobarano 8-19-1-97, 23 rushing.

6:11—Kalani drives to the Waialua 30 on a 33-yard completion. But a holding penalty pushes the Falcons back and Gabriel Maples comes up with a sack on fourth down. :36 Q2

5:45—Waialua recovers a fumble at the Kalani 24 and the Bulldogs call six consecutive runs, five going to Howard Nahooikaika, who scores on a 1-yd run. PAT good. Waialua 7, Kalani 0 8:32 Q2.

5:36—Waialua and Kalani scoreless at the end of the 1st qtr. Kalani’s drive ended with an interception by Lancen Kuni near the goal line. Waialua driving after his return to midfield.


5:27—Waialua QB Tevesi Toia gets to the Kalani 11 with a 40-yard run. Kalani’s Hunter Benson comes up with an interception to end the threat. 4:23 Q1.

5:07 p.m. — No JV game so we’re ready to get under way. Kalani wins the toss and defers. Waialua will receive to start the game.
