GAME NIGHT 8/26: Kalani/McKinley

The Tigers made headlines last week starting Alexandria Buchanan at QB, who threw a touchdown pass. They’re still searching for their first win in four years however and face a Kalani team that has suffered through two close losses to start the season.

8:33: Kalani runs the clock out for its first win of the season.

8:26: TOUCHDOWN KALANI. Matthew Wu takes an interception 34 yards to the house. PAT is good. 57-24 with 1:44 left to go.

8:16: TOUCHDOWN MCKINLEY. Sioeli Lopes-Liotolo takes a pick-six 80 yards to the house. Gotta hand it to him, he’s played almost every down this game. PAT is no good. 50-24 with 4:41 to go.

8:02: TOUCHDOWN TIGERS. Frank Steffany punches it in from one yard out, put the two-point conversion is no good. 50-18, 10:31 to go.

FOURTH QUARTER

7:55: Running clock has been activated but the Tigers are driving to end the third, and they’re now in the red zone.

7:45: TOUCHDOWN KALANI. Ryu Yamane recovers a fumble in the end zone after Tina-Sobarano and Robinson connect for a 21-yard swing screen. PAT is good. 50-12 with 6:18 to go in the third.

7:41: Three-and-out for McKinley, Kalani will take over from its own 20 with 7:38 left in the third.

7:37: Kalani punts for real this time, and McKinley will take over from its own 40 with 8:50 left in the third.

7:33: Rare three-and-out for the Kalani offense. But then they fake a punt, and get a first down.

7:30: Kalani will start the first drive of the half on its own 35 after the kickoff went out of bounds.

THIRD QUARTER

7:12: Kalani runs the ball for a one-yard gain and we’ve hit the half. Kalani 43, McKinley 12. Falcons to receive the ball to start the second half.

7:11: Falcons get the ball back after the punt on their own 23 with 16 seconds left in the half.

7:05: TACK ON ANOTHER TOUCHDOWN FOR KALANI. Tina-Sobarano scrambles being finding Logan Matsuoka for a 32-yard touchdown. PAT is good. 43-12 with 2:14 left in the half.

6:59: TOUCHDOWN MCKINLEY. Buchanan fires a perfect 70-yard DIME to Kaiwi Ahina for a touchdown. Two-point conversion is no good after a bad snap.

6:56: TOUCHDOWN KALANI. Tina-Sobarano connects with Tagad for another touchdown, this time from eight yards out. Mcclellan’s PAT is good. 36-6, 3:59 to go in the half.

6:48: Kalani starting its next drive on its own 32 with 6:16 left in the half after a McKinley punt.


6:41: TOUCHDOWN KALANI. Tina-Sobarano scrambles for 15 yards into the end zone. Cody Uehara takes the fake PAT into the end zone for the 2-point conversion. 29-6 with 9:17 to go in the second.

6:38: Kalani advances to its own 44 without even snapping the ball this possession, some unsportsmanlike conduct coming from McKinley’s side.

6:35: Kalani starting its next drive from their own 8 after a fumble on muffed punt return which they recover. 11:04 to go in the half.

SECOND QUARTER

6:32: End of the first. Tigers face second-and-10 from their own 31 when the second stanza starts.

6:30: Nu’u Koli now in at quarterback for McKinley.

6:28: ANOTHER ONE. The Falcons take immediate advantage after Ikaika Holden rushes for a 4-yard touchdown. PAT good. 21-6, 2:03 to go in the first.

6:26: FUMBLE. KALANI BALL. Falcons recover at the McKinley 4 with 2:07 to go in the first.

6:25: Touchback, McKinley will start on their own 20.

6:23: TOUCHDOWN FALCONS. Tina-Sobrano back at it again, this time with a 5-yard rush to the edge of the end zone. Mcclellan’s extra point is good, making it 14-6 with 2:56 to go in the first.

6:20: Tina-Sobrano and Jerick Robinson connect for a 73-yard gain, another DIME from Tina Sobrano.

6:18: TOUCHDOWN MCKINLEY. Anthony Jim takes a handoff 54 yards TO THE HOUSE. And by the way, Buchanan is 2-for-2 with negative five yards so far. 7-6 with 4:48 to go.

6:11: TOCUHDOWN KALANI. Seth Tina-Sobarano throws an absolute DIME to Travis Tagad for a 30-yard touchdown, hitting his guy in stride. Wayne Mcclellan‘s extra point is good. 7-0, 7:38 to go in the first.

6:04: Quick three-and-out for the McKinley offense, and the Falcons will start from their own 47 with 9:52 left in the first.

6:02: It’s Buchanan after all, and she completes her first pass for a yard.

6:00 p.m.: We’ve finished the national anthems, Hawaii Ponoi and both alma maters, and we’re set for kickoff. McKinley will receive. Let’s see who the Tigers trot out there under center.

NOTES: Longest losing streak all time is 57 by Kalani, McKinley’s current streak is 26. McKinley leads the series 20-5 and has lost successive games only twice. Kalani’s 41 points last year are the most in the series. McKinley has not had a receiver go over 100 yards since Tyrell Tuiasasopo in 2013, a span of 23 games.


McKinley was shut out four times last year and once this year, Kalani hasn’t shut out an opponent since blanking Waialua in 2014. Kalani is in danger of starting 0-3 for the first time since 2010. Kalani’s Seth Tina Sobarano is Kalani’s first three year starting quarterback since Mark Manzo in 1988-90. He has the most TD passes on Oahu without surrendering a pick.
