GAME NIGHT 8/17: Punahou/Kapolei

Terrell takes three handoffs and gets to the 1. Punahou takes a knee and that’ll do it.

Kapolei feaces fourth and 2 at its 24. Waiolama takes the handoff and is inches short. Punahou takes over. 2:05 Q4.


Kapolei kicker Micah Fonoti recovers his own onside kick, but Kapolei is called for illegal touch and it’s Punahou ball at midfield. A lot of the starter back in for Punahou. A third down pass is dropped and Punahou will punt.

Gomez fires deep and De’zhaun Stribling makes the catch and goes the distance. TOUCHDOWN KAPOLEI. PAT good. 4:52 Q4.

Punahou recovers the onside kick at its 45. Buffanblu go three and out. Kapolei ball at its 10. 5:07 Q4.

Freshman Mason Gomez in at QB for Kapolei. He picks up 9 yards on two carries and Robello picks up the first down to end the third quarter. Robello picks up 19 on fourth and 4 and converts another third down. Waiolama’s 12-yard run brings up first and goal at the 3. Robello finishes off the 14-play, 80-yard march. TOUCHDOWN KAPOLEI. Muasau scrambles for a first down and completes an 18-yard pass over the middle. The drive stalls and the Buffanblu punt, touchback. 1:27 Q3.

Muasau completes a throw down the right side for 38 yards to the Kapolei 31, but a mishandled snap is recovered by the Hurricanes. Kapolei pounds it on the ground. Robello picks up 22 and Waiolama’s 12-yard burst brings up first and goal at the 2. After a Punahou timeout, Waiolama goes off tackle for the final 2 yards. TOUCHDOWN KAPOLEI. PAT good. 3:28 Q3.

Kapolei getting some traction with Ezekiel Waiolama with 59 yards on six carries, all going at least 7 yards, in the Hurricanes’ first seven plays of this drive. Punahou takes timeout. On third and 1, Kapolei is called for illegal helmet contact to bring up third and 25 from the 45. Pass interference on Punahou makes it third and 10. Two incomplete passes and Punahou takes over at its 30.

Kapolei will receive the kickoff to open the third quarter. Bailey loses a fumble on Kapolei’s first play and Punahou recovers at the Hurricanes 25. Punahou gives the ball back on downs at the 25.

Bailey completes three consecutive passes and Kapolei picks up a first down, but the drive stalls and the Hurricanes punt. :35 Q2.

Kapolei picks up its second first down of the game on an unsportsmanlike conduct call on Punahou. But Alakai Gilman comes up with an interception and returns it to the Kapolei 46. Koa Eldredge makes a nice grab on third down for a 19-yard gain. After pass interference on Kapolei, Brady finds Eldredge over the middle from 20 yards out. TOUCHDOWN PUNAHOU. PAT good. 2:57 Q2.

Facing third and 13 at the 4, Bailey attempts a screen pass from his end zone. Kennedy Freeman takes it away from the receiver and takes it into the end zone. TOUCHDOWN PUNAHOU. PAT good. 5:57 Q2

Punahou called for holding on first down, but roughing the passer gives the Buffanblu a first down. Another hold moves Punahou back to the 50. On second and 20 Terrell takes a screen pass the distance, but an illegal block brings it back to the 40. Brady is sacked by Macael Afaese for a loss of 5 and completes another screen to Terrell. This time Kapolei stops it for a loss of 5 and the Buffanblu punt. 6:31 Q2.

Kapolei’s drive begins with a penalty and the Hurricanes can’t pick up any ground. They punt and Punahou takes over at its 47 after a holding call on the return.

Punahou freshman Tevarua Tafiti makes his second tackle for loss and Kapolei goes three and out. Quarter ends with Punahou at its 42. Brady hits Kalahiki for 17 yards then finds Vincent Terrell out of the backfield. Terrell breaks free down the sideline for 39 yards. Terrell finishes the drive with a 2-yard run up the middle. TOUCHDOWN PUNAHOU. PAT wide left. 11:19 Q2

Punahou converts on third down with a screen pass to Falates that breaks for 30 yards. The drive stalls but the punt is muffed and the Buffanblu recover at the Kapolei 10. On second and goal, Brady hits Moku Dancil-Evans on an 8-yard post. TOUCHDOWN PUNAHOU. PAT good. 1:49 Q1

Sophomore Noa Bailey starts at QB for Kapolei. The Hurricanes hand it to Zion-Jabez Robello on their first four plays, he breaks loose on the third for 23 yards to the 46. Bailey completes his first throw but Robello is stopped for a loss on third down and Kapolei punts. 4:49 Q1.

Hugh Brady starts at QB for Punahou and completes his first four throws for 59 yards, including a 31-yard strike to Tamatoa Falatea to the Kapolei 1. Brady is short on a throw on third and goal, the Buffanblu go for it and this time he hits Kanoa Kalahiki from 7 yards out. TOUCHDOWN PUNAHOU. PAT good. 8:19 Q1.

Punahou wins the toss and elects to receive the opening kickoff.
