GAME NIGHT 8/12: Kalani/Pearl City

Week 2 of the Hawaii high school football season begins Friday with five games on Oahu and two others involving Oahu teams taking place on Maui.

It was a critical game last season when Kalani knocked off Pearl City, 22-8, late in the season. The Falcons lost out on the playoffs via a tiebreaker while the Chargers finished one game out. The rematch takes place tonight at Aiea with a 7:30 p.m. approximate kickoff. It’s the opener for Kalani while Pearl City traveled to Maui last week and lost 29-0 to Lahainaluna. Kalani has won two of the last three meetings since losing 10 in a row to the Chargers.

10:30 p.m.: After trailing for nearly all of the second and third quarters, the Pearl City Chargers scored 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to seize a 35-20 victory over the Kalani Falcons.

The Chargers got some big plays in the fourth quarter on special teams. After Kalani scored early in the fourth to take a 20-13 lead, the Chargers blocked the extra point. Pearl City marched down the field and scored, then completed the two-point conversion to take back the lead. Later, Pearl City got a blocked punt by Zion Tupuola-Fetui, which set up Pearl City’s second touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Late in the fourth quarter, Pearl City got another break on special teams, when Kalani muffed a punt at its own five-yard line, and the Chargers recovered. Pearl City went on to score again, making the score 35-20 for the final margin of victory. Receiver Patrick Nunez led the way for the Chargers, hauling in nine passes for 144 yards and three touchdowns.

10:20 p.m.: And that’s that, the Chargers get a big win over a tough Kalani squad. Final score: 35-20.


10:10 p.m.:
And there is the dagger. Pearl City’s Simon scores from a yard out to make it 35-20 Chargers with 1:23 left. Kalani will be dwelling over the film of this second half.

9:54 p.m.: 15 yard pass from Padilla to Nunez for another Pearl City score with 7:54 to go. Heartbreaking turn of events for the Falcons. 28-20 Chargers with plenty time (7:54) left. Can the Falcons respond?

9:45 p.m.: Simon hooks up with Nunez from 10 yards out and Pearl City makes the 2-point conversion for a 21-20 lead!


9:38 p.m.: Tina-Sobarano scores from 1 yard for Kalani, Pat blocked. 20-13 Kalani 11:53 fourth

9:27 p.m.: Pearl city quarterback Simon is down, appeared to hurt his left knee on a scramble but looks like he walked it off.

8:53 p.m.: Patrick Nunez of PC has 3 catches for 154 yards and a TD
Ikaika Andaya of Kalani has 4 catches for 152 and a TD at the half. Nunez caught a 96 harder and Andaya has a 79 yarder.

8:29 p.m.: Tina-Sobarano 55 yards to Andaya, PAT good. Kalani going through the air to Pearl City’s ground game.

8:10 p.m.: Seth Tina-Sobarano 3 yard run for Kalani to tie it at 7 with 10:51 left in the second. Two very different styles of offense here.

8:04 p.m.: The first quarter ends with the Chargers up by a score.


7:55 p.m.: Charles Freitas 20 yard run for a touchdown, Pearl City takes a 7-0 lead with 3:57 left in the first quarter.

7:03 p.m.: JV game wraps up, Pearl City 42, Kalani 7
