GAME NIGHT 8/11: Kailua/Moanalua

Kailua coach Joseph Wong will get his first look at the Surfriders under the lights in 2017 as Kailua makes its season debut in its OIA regular season opener against Moanalua, which hung tough with Punahou for three quarters before losing 35-7 last week at Radford. Kailua is 11-4 all-time against Na Menehune and has won the last two since Moanalua won three straight from 2012-14.

10:43 — Another fumble in the end zone results in another safety with :10 left. Game ends on the free kick.

10:33 — Kailua backup QB Cole Weber caps a six-play drive, all runs, with a 14-yard run. TOUCHDOWN KAILUA. PAT good.

10:26 — The fourth down pass in long, but Au is sacked in the end zone for a safety to make it 35-0. Running clock in effect.

10:14 — Kailua partially blocks a punt and lineman Taylor Tagupa returns it to the Moanalua 14. A sloppy quarter ends with the Surfriders facing fourth-and-goal at the Moanalua 4.

10:00 — Third quarter is under way. Kailua opens with a punt but gets it back with Spencer-Choy Foo’s second pick of the night. Moanalua’s Nainoa Decorte strips the ball way from Rasay for the first Na Menehune takeaway. But they give it right back with Kaniala Williams coming up with Kailua’s sixth interception. He takes it back 60 yards but a holding call negates the TD.

9:24 — TOUCHDOWN KAILUA. After a holding call, Mejia completes a 25-yard pass to Solomon Farley. Dudoit-Kamai dives in for the score. Kailua’s PAT run is short.


9:19 — Dakota Kadooka comes up with Kailua’s fourth interception of the first half. He returns it 30 yards but loses it on a fumble. Moanalua keeps possession but goes for it on fourth and 1 at its own 17 and the pass is batted down. Kailua ball.

9:13 — TOUCHDOWN KAILUA. Mejia completes a 6-play drive with an 8-yard pass over the middle to Dylan Kurahashi-Choy Foo. Mejia now 11-19, 151 yards, 3 TDs. PAT good.

9:06 — Bruddah Spencer-Choy Foo comes up with Kailua’s third interception and second off a deflection. Surfriders ball at midfield, 7:50.

9:03 — Moanalua’s possessions have gone INT, punt, INT, punt. Mejia hits Wright on a post for 33 yards. A 14-yard urn is wiped out by a holding call. Cameron Dudoit-Kamai breaks loose for a 25-yard reception on third-and-20. Facemask moves to the ball to the 10. Mejia hits Kaniala Williams on a 7-yard pass. TOUCHDOWN KAILUA. PAT doesn’t clear the line. Surfriders up 20-0, 8:10.

8:44 — Mejia completes a 17-yard pass to Gaege Kupahu on third-and-10 then scrambles for 9 to the Moanalua 10, but it’s called back by a holding penalty. Mejia completes a 15-yard pass on fourth down and Samson Rasay scores on an 11-yard run on the next play. TOUCHDOWN KAILUA.  PAT Good. :30

8:37 — Au’s pass bounces off a helmet at is intercepted by Kailua’s Leighton Russell. Surfriders ball at the Moanalua 42 after a personal foul penalty. 3:28

8:33 — Mejia scrambles for 14 yards but the Kailua drive stalls at midfield and Moanalua takes over at its 17. 5:16

8:25 — Moanalua goes three-and-out. Kailua takes over at its 36. 8:18 Q1.

8:19 — TOUCHDOWN KAILUA. On fourth-and-6, Aaron Mejia completes a fade to 6-foot-4 Tanner Wright for a 13-yard TD. PAT Good., 9:56.

8:16 — On the first play from scrimmage, Kailua’s Pono Kohatsu-Roberson intercepts a pass over the middle from Nicholas-Alexandre Au. Surfriders take over at the Moanalua 17.

8:13 — Moanalua wins the toss and will receive.


7:38 p.m. — Moanalua wins the JV game 26-20. Na Menehune scored on a 62-yard pass with 1:47 left. Varsity game coming up after 8 p.m.
